Scottish University Students Create Tartan for US Independence Anniversary

Students at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland have been tasked with designing a tartan to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence. This initiative was commissioned by the Scottish Government to highlight the enduring historical and cultural connections between Scotland and the United States.

Participants from Heriot-Watt's School of Textiles and Design, located in Galashiels, have submitted various design proposals. The winning tartan design is scheduled to be unveiled during the summer. Once selected, the design will be officially registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority as the designated tartan for America250, the organisation coordinating anniversary events in the US.

The initial production of the tartan will take place at Lovat Mill in Hawick. Additionally, the student responsible for the winning design will have the opportunity to travel to Washington DC to present the tartan.

Five students have been shortlisted for the final selection: Grace Nicholls, Kaci McEwan, Elisabeth Fandke, Iris Morley, and Megan Beattie.

The university noted that the inspiration behind the students' designs was "as diverse as the samples they've woven."

"It's a remarkable opportunity to contribute to a project of real cultural - and lasting - importance while showcasing the breadth of skill, creativity and innovation that define Heriot-Watt's school of textiles and design," said Professor Fiona Grant, executive dean of the School of Textiles and Design.

Each tartan submission was required to meet specific criteria, including historical and cultural relevance, creativity and originality, public appeal, and suitability for both ceremonial and commercial use.

Mark Boyce, head of Scottish Government USA, Scotland's representative office in the United States, commented on the significance of the project:

"The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is a moment to reflect on the long and historic ties between the United States and Scotland.

A commemorative tartan is the perfect symbol of this interwoven relationship that continues to thrive through trade, education, culture and diaspora."

This tartan design project forms part of a broader programme of activities linked to America250, which also highlights the contributions of Scottish immigrants in shaping United States history.
