Concerns Over AI Impact on Tech Careers and Economy
The founder of British computer manufacturer Raspberry Pi has cautioned that overestimating the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) might discourage individuals from pursuing careers in technology and could negatively affect the economy.
Eben Upton expressed these views during the BBC's Big Boss Interview podcast, stating that this overestimation could
"distort people's choices in ways that make that skill shortage worse and not better".

He noted that some individuals are
"very inclined to overestimate what these [AI] tools can do,"and warned against predictions that AI would eliminate large numbers of computing jobs in the near future.
Job Loss Predictions and Industry Responses
The emergence of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude has sparked forecasts of significant job reductions, especially among technology workers and recent graduates. Major companies including Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft have attributed tens of thousands of layoffs over the past year to AI advancements.
However, some analysts argue that AI is being used as a convenient explanation for workforce reductions following a hiring surge during the post-Covid period by many large corporations.
Impact on Tech Education and Career Choices
Upton warned that overestimating chatbots' ability to replace human roles could
"undo a lot of the good work that's been done, not just by Raspberry Pi, but by a lot of other organisations"in encouraging people to enter technology careers.
He added,
"It's possible to get caught up in this. This is the risk of damage right in this moment of incredible enthusiasm for what are genuinely incredible tools."
Discussing guidance for young people, Upton said,
"You read in the paper: 'What guidance should you give your child about what GCSEs to choose in the context of an AI future?' We have no data to inform a rational decision on that.
The answer is: wait five years, wait 10 years, and then maybe we might know something."
Economic Growth and Engineering Supply
When asked if this phenomenon could harm economic growth, Upton responded,
"Absolutely. We need a supply of engineers."
Raspberry Pi’s Role and Market Success
Raspberry Pi's devices are the best-selling computers produced by a UK company and are popular among hobbyist programmers.
Upton founded Raspberry Pi in 2012 due to concerns that young people were losing computing skills as mobile phones and game consoles replaced devices that were easily programmable.
The company went public on the London Stock Exchange in 2024 and has become a notable success for the UK stock market, especially as other firms, including Cambridge-based chip maker Arm, have chosen to list in the US instead.
Challenges of Energy Costs in UK Manufacturing
Upton acknowledged that while the UK possesses
"enormous"industrial capacity, high energy costs remain
"a challenge"for manufacturers.
Britain has experienced some of the highest energy prices among G7 countries in recent years, which has adversely affected businesses.
He stated,
"About the only reason I wouldn't do engineering build objects in the UK is the high cost of energy, and we need to do something about that.
We're extremely lucky we're not running a fertiliser factory or an oil refinery."
Upton also highlighted the impact of energy costs on labor expenses, saying,
"The cost of energy in the home has an impact on your labour cost. You have to pay people enough money to live."
