Teacher's Karaoke Rendition of Nessun Dorma Gains Widespread Attention

A video featuring a teacher performing a karaoke version of the opera classic Nessun Dorma during a night out has been viewed over two million times online. The performance has also attracted interest from producers of television talent shows.

Benjamin Gillham, a 37-year-old performing arts teacher at Foxfield School in Wirral, was at Coopers Townhouse in Liverpool with his friend Laura when she entered his name for the song after they had "a couple of drinks," without his prior knowledge.

"We had a couple of drinks and Laura put my name down without me knowing. She put my name down for Nessun dorma and I said 'oh come on' and now I'm just really thankful that she did."

Benjamin expressed gratitude for Laura's decision as his rendition impressed the audience. He described the public response as "unbelievable" and revealed that he has since received calls from producers of BBC One's The Voice UK and ITV's Britain's Got Talent.

Footage of his performance has been widely shared and viewed millions of times across social media platforms including Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

Benjamin's Passion for Teaching and Performing Arts

Benjamin shared his enthusiasm for teaching performing arts at Foxfield School, stating that it "brings so much happiness" to the pupils.

"Who doesn't want to sing and dance around all day? And luckily I get to do that."

He described teaching as his dream job, with the exception of possibly being a recording artist.

"I have had a few calls from producers of the likes of The Voice and Britain's Got Talent, which is absolutely unbelievable."

Background on Nessun Dorma

Nessun Dorma is featured in the final act of Italian composer Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot. The aria gained global recognition in 1990 when The Three Tenors—Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras, and Plácido Domingo—performed it ahead of the Italia90 World Cup held in Italy.

During the same tournament, Pavarotti's 1972 recording of Nessun Dorma was used as the theme song for the BBC's coverage. The aria reached number two on the UK singles charts in June 1990 and was featured again by the BBC following England's 4-0 victory over Ukraine in the Euro 2020 quarter-final.
