Stephen Colbert to Co-Write New Lord of the Rings Film

US television host Stephen Colbert has revealed his next project following the conclusion of his late-night talk show: co-writing a new film based on The Lord of the Rings.

Colbert, known for his deep admiration of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, will collaborate with his son, screenwriter Peter McGee, to adapt an early segment of the first novel in the series, The Fellowship of the Ring.

In a video call with director Peter Jackson, Colbert explained that the film "would be its own story that could fit into the larger story," aiming to remain "completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made."

End of Late-Night Show and New Creative Opportunity

The CBS network announced the cancellation of Colbert's late-night program last summer, with the show scheduled to end in May after a 33-year run.

Colbert shared that he conceived the idea for the film, reportedly titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, but initially doubted he would have the time to pursue it.

"As much as I love it, I knew I couldn't do that [film] and do the show at the same time. But it turns out I'm going to be free starting this summer."

Focus on Early Chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring

Colbert intends to adapt chapters three through eight of The Fellowship of the Ring, which depict Frodo and his fellow hobbits embarking on their epic journey.

"You know what the books mean to me and what your films mean to me," Colbert told Jackson.
"But the thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in the Fellowship that y'all never developed into the first movie back in the day."

He added that he discussed the project with his son Peter, and together they devised what they believed would work well, particularly as a framing device for the story.

"I started talking it over with my son Peter, who's also a screenwriter, and we worked out what we thought would work, especially as a framing device for that story."

Film Synopsis and Collaboration Details

The official synopsis of the film states: "Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam's daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began."

Colbert recounted to Jackson that it took him several years to gather the courage to reach out, but he made the call two years ago, and Jackson responded positively to the idea.

"It took me a few years to scrape my courage into a pile to give you a call,"

Currently, Colbert is collaborating with McGee and Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote the previous Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films.

Boyens is also co-writing the upcoming Lord of the Rings-related project, The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis and scheduled for release in 2027.

Legacy of the Lord of the Rings Films

Peter Jackson directed the highly successful Lord of the Rings film trilogy over 20 years ago, earning the Academy Award for Best Director for The Fellowship of the Ring in 2004.

This was followed by the Hobbit film trilogy and a major Amazon Prime television spin-off series.
