Career Highlight in Gavin & Stacey Finale
Welsh actor Rakie Ayola has described her brief role in the finale of the BBC comedy Gavin & Stacey as a significant moment in her distinguished career spanning stage and screen.
Ayola portrayed the registrar who officiated the wedding of beloved characters Nessa and Smithy, played by the show's writers Ruth Jones and James Corden. She reflected on the experience as a defining point in her professional journey.
"Standing between Ruth and James, it suddenly occurred to me that this was the picture," said Ayola.
"I thought, 'wow, look at me, so this is the most important and influential minute of my career'."
The Bafta Cymru award-winning actress has an extensive television portfolio, including appearances in The Pact, Anthony, Silent Witness, Casualty, and Doctor Who, among others.
How the Role Came About
Ayola, who hails from Cardiff, recounted how the opportunity arose after a chance encounter with Ruth Jones during a theatre visit. Shortly thereafter, Jones contacted her with an offer to appear in the final episode, mentioning there was "one scene" remaining.
Ayola speculated on the nature of the scene, guessing it involved a "wedding, a birth or a funeral," and correctly surmised she was to play the registrar at a wedding.
Fans had long anticipated the union of Nessa and Smithy, and the Christmas Day finale attracted a large audience, with 59% of Wales' population and 39% of the UK tuning in.

"I just put two and two together and bingo," Ayola said.
Recent Work and Awards
In 2023, Ayola received the Bafta Cymru Siân Phillips award, which honors a Welsh individual who has made a significant contribution to a major feature film or television programme.
Her most recent television appearance was in 's The Falling, a drama featuring Keeley Hawes and Paapa Essiedu, which explores the relationship between a nun and a Catholic priest.
Additionally, Ayola has been filming in Wales for The Party, a new five-part drama alongside fellow Welsh actors Luke Evans and Tom Cullen. Based on Elizabeth Day's acclaimed novel, the series centers on a journalist influenced by his friendship with a wealthy politician.
