Phil Collins and Oasis Nominated for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Phil Collins has received his first nomination for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist, joining other potential inductees such as Oasis, Jeff Buckley, Lauryn Hill, Pink, Shakira, and Mariah Carey.

Collins, aged 75, was previously inducted as a member of Genesis in 2010. This year, he has been recognized for his solo career, which includes iconic 1980s tracks like In the Air Tonight, Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now), and Easy Lover.

He is among 17 performers nominated for induction in 2024.

Among the nominees, Jeff Buckley, Lauryn Hill, Pink, and Shakira are first-time contenders, while Oasis and Mariah Carey are both on their third nomination attempt.

The Wu-Tang Clan also feature among the nominees, a notable inclusion following recent controversy sparked by Gene Simmons of Kiss, who questioned hip-hop's place in the Hall of Fame.

Phil Collins' Recent Health and Career Updates

Collins remains a favored candidate, especially as his music has reached a new generation amid his recent health challenges.

"Everything that could go wrong with me did go wrong," Collins told Zoe Ball on the BBC Radio 2 podcast Eras.
"I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should do."

He detailed his health struggles, stating:

"I got Covid in hospital, my kidneys started to back up, everything that could all seemed to sort of converge at the same time. And I had five operations on my knee."

Collins expressed a desire to tour again but was uncertain about fully committing:

"I would love to tour again but wasn't sure I wanted to go as far as to launch that boat."

His last major solo tour was the Not Dead Yet Tour from 2017 to 2019. During the Genesis reunion world tour in 2021 and 2022, he performed while seated due to his health.

Additionally, Collins mentioned the possibility of returning to the studio to complete unfinished projects:

"I may go back into the recording studio to work on some things that are half-formed or were never finished."

Oasis and Other Notable Nominees

Oasis will learn if their recent reunion has bolstered their standing in the United States, a market they struggled to fully penetrate during their initial run.

However, lead singer Liam Gallagher has been openly critical of the Hall of Fame, previously stating he was uninterested in receiving an award from what he called "some geriatric in a cowboy hat."

He added, perhaps sarcastically, that Oasis didn't deserve their nomination "as much as Mariah [Carey]."

Mariah Carey has noted her own connection to the Hall of Fame through her lawyer, Allen Grubman, who was inducted before her. Grubman has represented high-profile artists including Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, and Lady Gaga.

British Artists and Induction Process

This year’s nominations feature strong British representation, including Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, and Sade, all vying for induction on their second or third attempts.

The selection process involves a panel of voters who typically choose between six and eight performers from the nominees to be inducted.

Eligibility for induction requires that artists or bands have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior.

The inductees will be announced in April, with the official ceremony scheduled for the autumn.
