Patricia Greene's Legacy in The Archers

Patricia Greene, the longest serving cast member of BBC Radio 4's soap opera The Archers, has passed away at the age of 95.

She was best known for her role as Jill Archer, a maternal figure celebrated for her lemon drizzle cake, a character she portrayed for nearly seven decades since her debut in 1957.

The announcement of her death was made on the Today programme, where BBC Radio 4 controller Mohit Bakaya praised Greene's contribution to the series as "outstanding."

"It has been a pleasure to hear her ever-evolving portrayal of Jill over the decades," the statement read, adding that Greene "leaves a wonderful legacy."

"Ambridge will not be the same without her, and all of us here at BBC Radio 4 send our love and condolences to her family at this difficult time," the statement continued.

Jeremy Howe, the editor of The Archers, described Greene as "utterly singular, a fabulous and raucously funny raconteur" in a statement. He characterized her portrayal of Jill as "formidable, but also wonderfully warm, loving and enormous fun."

"It was an incredible privilege to work with her," Howe added.

Career and Background

Patricia Greene joined The Archers after completing her training at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

The Archers holds the distinction of being the longest running daily serialised radio drama, having aired continuously since 1951. The programme currently broadcasts six days a week, with 13-minute episodes that follow the lives of residents in the fictional farming village of Ambridge.

In addition to her iconic role in The Archers, Greene was awarded an MBE in 1997. Her other acting credits include appearances in the ITV soap Crossroads and BBC series such as Doctors and Casualty.

Despite moving into a care home in August 2023, Greene continued to record episodes of The Archers.
