Bonnie Tyler Passes Away at 75

Singer Bonnie Tyler, renowned for hits such as Total Eclipse of the Heart, Holding Out for a Hero, and It's a Heartache, has died at the age of 75.

A statement on the celebrated Welsh power ballad singer's official website announced:

"Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for."

In May, Tyler, originally from Skewen in south Wales, was placed into an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal.

Her spokesperson reported last month that she had emerged from the coma but remained "very unwell and in intensive care."

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler grew up in a council house in Neath.

She was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell while performing in a club in Swansea, leading to the release of her first single, Lost in France, in 1977.

That same year, her country-pop ballad It's a Heartache reached number four on the UK singles chart and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Breakthrough with 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'

Tyler's most significant hit, the rock-infused Total Eclipse of the Heart, was released six years later in 1983, topping charts in both the UK and the US.

The dramatic song, written by Meat Loaf's lyricist Jim Steinman, was originally titled Vampires in Love, as it was composed for a musical adaptation of Nosferatu.

"I never get tired of singing it," she recently told . "I love it because everyone can't wait to sing it."

Tyler received a Grammy nomination for Total Eclipse of the Heart, as well as two additional nominations for the album Faster Than the Speed of Night and the single Here She Comes.

Other Notable Works and Achievements

Jim Steinman also wrote Tyler's other major 1980s pop-rock hit, the energetic and passionate Holding Out for a Hero, which featured on the Footloose film soundtrack.

In 2013, Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 19th out of 26 participants.

She was honored with an MBE in 2023 for her contributions to music.

Recent Activities and Legacy

Last year, Tyler released a club version of Total Eclipse of the Heart titled Together, produced by David Guetta and Hypaton.

In 2024, the original track surpassed one billion streams on Spotify, 43 years after its initial release.

"I'm really happy, when you think about it, there's only 8.3 billion people in the world," she remarked.

Tyler previously performed Total Eclipse of the Heart aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean during the solar eclipse event that swept across the United States in 2017.

She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Robert Sullivan.
