Actor Nicholas Brendon Passes Away at 54
US actor Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role in the cult television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54.
Brendon's family confirmed his passing in a statement posted on social media, stating that
"he passed in his sleep of natural causes".
They further described him as
"passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was."
The family added,
"Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art."
Career Highlights
Brendon portrayed Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer across seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. His character was the best friend of the titular character, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Earlier this month, Gellar announced on Instagram that a planned reboot of Buffy had been cancelled.
Born in Los Angeles, Brendon earned three Emmy nominations for his role in Buffy: two for Best TV Actor and one for Best TV Supporting Actor.
His twin brother, Kelly Donovan Schultz, served as Brendon's body double in two episodes of the series.
Brendon also worked alongside Alyson Hannigan, who paid tribute to him on Instagram, writing:
"My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP."
Following his work on Buffy, Brendon appeared in a variety of television shows including Criminal Minds, Private Practice, and Kitchen Confidential.
His film credits include Psycho Beach Party, Big Gay Love, and Redwood.
Health and Advocacy
Brendon was candid about his health challenges, which included a heart attack and two spinal surgeries to treat cauda equina syndrome, a rare condition that can impact movement as well as bladder and bowel function.
He also lived with a stutter and became an advocate for the cause, serving as a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America.
The actor openly discussed his struggles with substance addiction, alcoholism, and mental health issues.
Regarding his health, his family told the Hollywood Reporter:
"While it's no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing."
