US actress Joy Harmon, recognized primarily for a brief yet memorable scene in the classic film Cool Hand Luke, has died at the age of 87.

Harmon passed away at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday after battling pneumonia for several weeks, according to reports from US media outlets.

Iconic Role in Cool Hand Luke

In the Paul Newman prison drama, Harmon's character did not have any spoken lines and appeared on screen for approximately three minutes during a car-washing scene filled with sexual innuendo.

During this brief but notable scene, Harmon washes a car, squeezing soap from a sponge on her body, which attracts the attention and comments of prisoners laboring nearby as they dig a ditch.

Although officially credited simply as The Girl, one of the prisoners distracted by her performance refers to her character as "Lucille."

This moment became the most recognized part of Harmon's career, which included 32 credited appearances in films and television from the 1950s through the early 1970s, as documented by IMDB.

"I was just washing a car to the best of my ability and having fun with it, with the sponge and everything," Harmon told Entertainment Weekly in 2017.
"My concept of the [scene] was not like what came out. I was not aware that there were two meanings to things that I was doing, and I'm still not really that much aware of what they all were."

Career and Later Life

Harmon began her career in the entertainment industry as a child model and pageant queen, gradually advancing through appearances on comedy and quiz shows.

Most of her film roles occurred during the 1960s, and she also appeared in television series such as Bewitched, Batman, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Beverly Hillbillies, The Odd Couple, and The Monkees.
