Background on Jessie Buckley

Jessie Buckley grew up in Killarney, County Kerry, and has been active in film and theatre for nearly twenty years. She is recognized not only for her acting but also for her musical talents. Buckley studied singing, piano, clarinet, saxophone, and harp at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) in Dublin.

In 2001, she was selected from approximately 40,000 performers to receive RIAM’s nationwide High Achiever award. At 17, she auditioned for the BBC TV show I'd Do Anything, a competition to cast the role of Nancy in a West End production of Oliver! Although she finished as runner-up, Buckley declined the opportunity to be Nancy’s understudy and instead pursued other roles on the London stage.

She subsequently secured a role in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music at the Menier Chocolate Factory theatre. Buckley later enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, graduating with a degree in acting in 2013.
