Notable Omissions in Oscars In Memoriam Segment
This year’s Academy Awards presented an extended in memoriam tribute to honour the many Hollywood legends who passed away over the last twelve months.
Tributes were given in standalone speeches to key figures such as , , and , while Claudia Cardinale and Catherine O’Hara also received extended recognition.
However, several actors were notably absent from the tribute. Among the most prominent omissions was French cinema icon Brigitte Bardot, who died in December at the age of 91.
Bardot, known for films including And God Created Woman, The Truth, A Very Private Affair, and Contempt, later distanced herself from the film industry and became an advocate for animal rights activism as well as far-right politics.
Her inclusion in the César awards’ tribute in February was controversial due to her political views. Some have speculated that this controversy influenced the Oscars organisers’ decision to exclude her from their tribute.
However, no similar reasoning appears to apply to other omitted actors such as the Indian actor , who died last year after a 65-year career spanning over 300 Hindi films, or , best known for his leading role in the 1971 film Harold and Maude.
There was also no apparent justification for excluding two television stars who also appeared in films and died young: , known for movies like Varsity Blues and The Rules of Attraction, and , who featured in the X-Men film series.
Additionally, British actor , primarily recognized for his television work but who appeared in acclaimed films such as The Boys from Brazil, The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne, A Chorus of Disapproval, Howards End, and An Awfully Big Adventure, was also omitted, possibly due to his stronger association with television.
