Eric Dane Passes Away After ALS Diagnosis
Eric Dane, the actor renowned for his roles on Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at the age of 53, less than a year after publicly revealing his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Dane gained widespread recognition for portraying Cal Jacobs, the family patriarch, on the popular HBO teen drama Euphoria. Prior to this, he was best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as 'Dr. McSteamy,' on the medical drama Grey's Anatomy.
Born in California, Dane was diagnosed with ALS last year and dedicated his final months to raising awareness about this disease, which is the most common form of motor neurone disease (MND).
"With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS," reads a statement from his family.
Dane was married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, and together they had two children.
The family statement further noted that he spent his last days surrounded by close friends, his devoted wife, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia, "who were the center of his world."
"He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he's received," it said.
In addition to his television roles, Dane portrayed Jason Dean in the fantasy drama series Charmed and Captain Tom Chandler in the action drama The Last Ship. His film credits include Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, and Burlesque.
Understanding ALS
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rare degenerative condition that leads to progressive paralysis of muscles. It affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord responsible for muscle movement, resulting in a gradual loss of the ability to speak, eat, walk, and breathe independently.
