Major Bridge Works on M8 Near Hillington

Significant bridge maintenance on the M8 motorway near Hillington is scheduled to cause disruption over the upcoming weekend. The roads company Amey has issued a notice informing drivers that the westbound off-slip road at the Hillington interchange will be closed from 21:00 on Friday until 06:00 on Monday, 11 May.

A clearly signed diversion route will be in place during this period to assist motorists.

The closure is expected to impact traffic heading towards the nearby Braehead shopping centre, which will remain open as usual throughout the works.

Details of the Long-Term Project

This closure forms part of Phase Five of an extensive, ongoing project focused on Junction 26 of the M8. In September of the previous year, a nine-month disruption period was announced, affecting both carriageways and scheduled to conclude in May this year.

The £10 million programme aims to upgrade and refurbish four bridges constructed in 1968 that carry the M8 over local roads and a railway line. The surfaces of these bridges have suffered wear and tear, resulting in pothole issues.

In addition to resurfacing, the project involves strengthening or completely replacing the existing edge parapets and central reservation barriers to enhance safety and durability.

Traffic Diversion and Safety Measures

Motorists intending to use the M8 Junction 26 westbound off-slip road during the closure will be redirected to exit via the M8 Junction 25A westbound off-slip road towards Braehead. From there, traffic will turn left onto Old Govan Road, then take another left onto Kings Inch Road, proceeding towards Hillington Interchange where the diversion concludes.

A contraflow system remains in place on the M8 at this location, accompanied by a 40mph speed limit throughout the duration of the project. Average speed cameras will continue to operate to ensure the safety of the workforce and road users.

Appreciation from Partners

Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, Renfrewshire Council, Glasgow City Council, West Dunbartonshire Council, and Braehead Shopping Centre have collectively expressed their gratitude to road users for their understanding and patience during the works.

"We thank all road users in advance for their patience as we carry out these essential upgrades to improve safety and infrastructure on the M8."
