Blue Flag Awards Announced for BCP Council Beaches

The Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council has announced that six of its beaches have been awarded Blue Flags this year, while Avon Beach did not receive the accolade due to an "administrative error." Despite this, the council emphasized that Avon Beach maintains an "exceptional standard of care and quality."

Keep Britain Tidy granted Blue Flags to Sandbanks, Shore Road, Canford Cliffs, Durley Chine, Fisherman's Walk, and Highcliffe Beach within the BCP Council jurisdiction. Avon Beach was the only beach in the area to miss out on the Blue Flag award this year because of the administrative oversight.

"Those who know and love Avon Beach will already know its appeal and its excellence goes far beyond any single accreditation," the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole authority said.

The Blue Flags represent recognition for beaches that meet high standards in water quality, environmental management, safety, and visitor services, as awarded by the anti-litter charity Keep Britain Tidy. The awards reflect the "consistently high standards delivered throughout the year" by the seafront teams and their partners, according to the council.

Sandbanks Beach Maintains Long-Standing Blue Flag Status

Sandbanks Beach was awarded a Blue Flag for the 39th consecutive year, maintaining its status every year since the awards began. This demonstrates the beach’s ongoing commitment to excellence and environmental standards.

In addition to the Blue Flags, six beaches—Sandbanks, Shore Road, Canford Cliffs, Durley Chine, Fisherman's Walk, and Highcliffe Beach—also received the Seaside Award. This award, which was also given to Bournemouth, Boscombe, and Avon Beach, recognizes beaches that provide a high-quality, well-managed, and clean environment.

Avon Beach’s Amenities and Appeal Remain Strong

Regarding the absence of a Blue Flag for Avon Beach, the council highlighted the beach’s well-maintained promenades, thoughtfully managed facilities, and a vibrant mix of cafés, kiosks, and amenities. Notable attractions include a popular beach sauna and The Noisy Lobster restaurant, all of which continue to attract visitors to Christchurch Bay.

Richard Herrett, portfolio holder for destination, leisure, and commercial operations, said: "While awards are important recognition, what matters most is the quality of the experience on our beaches, which we are committed to maintaining across all locations."
He added: "We will continue to work with partners to ensure our coastline remains one of the best in the country."
