Alexander Zverev Advances to Roland Garros Quarter-Finals
Alexander Zverev has reinforced his position as a leading contender for the 2024 French Open men's singles title by securing a commanding straight-sets victory over Jesper de Jong. This win marks his sixth consecutive year reaching the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.
The 29-year-old second seed has long been viewed as a potential Grand Slam champion. Despite reaching finals at three of the four major tournaments, he is yet to claim his first Grand Slam title.
With world number one Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic both ousted in the tournament's first week, and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz sidelined due to injury, Zverev's path to the championship has become more accessible.
On Court Philippe-Chatrier, Zverev displayed composure and skill, overcoming De Jong with a scoreline of 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-1.
"It was a bit difficult in the beginning," Zverev said on court. "I didn't start strong and he started really fast. But once I found my rhythm, I was comfortable.
My game is there. It's about showing it on the match courts."
De Jong's defeat concludes his best Grand Slam performance to date. Entering the main draw as a lucky loser, the Dutch player was defeated on his 26th birthday but is set to re-enter the world's top 100 rankings.
Zverev's next opponent will be 27th seed Rafael Jodar, whom he described as "incredibly talented," in the quarter-finals.
The Spanish teenager, competing in only his second Grand Slam, staged a remarkable comeback from two sets down to defeat compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta, dropping just five games in the final three sets.
Other Tournament Highlights
- Sabalenka will face Osaka in a French Open night session.
- Kostyuk defeated four-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek.
Match Details: Zverev vs. De Jong
The opening set was closely contested, with De Jong matching Zverev's powerful baseline play and showing aggressive net approaches. De Jong surged to a 3-0 lead, breaking Zverev in his first service game and conceding only two points on his own serve. He also led 3-0 in the tie-break before Zverev rallied to win seven consecutive points and take the set.
In the second set, Zverev exercised patience, converting one of only two break-point chances in the tenth game. The third set lasted 24 minutes, during which Zverev dominated.
Serving relentlessly in the final two sets, Zverev lost just six points across nine service games and demonstrated excellent net play, winning 29 of 38 points at the net.
Zverev's Career and Prospects
A former world number two, Zverev has claimed 24 ATP titles, including seven Masters 1000 trophies. He is a two-time ATP Finals champion and earned a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Despite these achievements, a Grand Slam title has eluded him. He came closest at Roland Garros in 2024, where he led Carlos Alcaraz by two sets to one in the final but ultimately fell short.
Currently, Zverev is one of only three top-10 seeds remaining in the draw and among three players with major final experience. He is competing on clay, the surface on which he has won nine of his 24 career titles.
Importantly, while many rivals have endured multiple five-set matches, Zverev has won three of his four matches in straight sets, spending just over nine hours on court.
