Zverev Advances to French Open Semifinals
Alexander Zverev, who has secured 24 ATP Tour singles titles, maintained his pursuit of a Grand Slam victory with a decisive win over the promising teenager Rafael Jodar, securing his place in the French Open semifinals.
As the tournament's second seed and the highest-ranked male player remaining following several unexpected eliminations in Paris, Zverev will face Czech 26th seed Jakub Mensik for a spot in the final scheduled for Sunday.
Mensik earned his semifinal berth by defeating Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca in straight sets during Tuesday's night session.
Despite being widely regarded as a future Grand Slam champion, Zverev has yet to claim a major title, having lost in three finals and seven semifinals throughout his career.
He was runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in the 2024 French Open final, where he led by two sets to one before ultimately falling short. Additionally, Zverev has been eliminated three times in the French Open semifinals.
Tuesday's match against 19-year-old Jodar was anticipated to be challenging, given the Spaniard's potential as a future star.
However, Zverev, who is ten years older than Jodar, leveraged his experience to secure a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 6-3 victory.
"I want to keep going and win the matches ahead of me - that is my goal and my aim," Zverev said. "Today was a very good test against a very good player. I am happy to be in the semi-final but for now, that is it."
Mensik Holds Off Fonseca in Quarterfinal Thriller
Jakub Mensik outlasted Joao Fonseca in a marathon third set to wrap up his quarter-final victory.
Mensik and Fonseca, aged 20 and 19 respectively, are considered promising talents who could challenge top players like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the coming years. Their quarter-final match showcased their potential.
Both players were competing in their first major quarter-final. Mensik admitted to feeling some early nerves during his post-match interview, but his powerful serve was instrumental in building a two-set lead without facing a break point.
Fonseca had previously staged two comebacks from two sets down at this year's French Open, including a notable third-round victory over 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Throughout the match, Fonseca displayed moments of brilliance, but was unable to mount another comeback under the roof on Court Philippe Chatrier.
The third set lasted nearly 80 minutes, with Fonseca twice gaining a break advantage before Mensik recovered each time.
Serving at 6-5 down, Fonseca saved six match points in an extended 12th game, forcing a tie-break. Mensik controlled the tie-break to secure a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory.
"At the end of the match, there were some incredible shots," Mensik said. "I'm super happy that I'm the one that came back. I was a break down a couple of times but I managed to stay focused, stay in the match and keep fighting until the end."
Mensik is the first Czech player to reach a Grand Slam men's singles semifinal since Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon in 2017. He is expected to re-enter the world's top 20 rankings.

Additional Tournament Context
Zverev is one of only three top-10 seeds remaining in the tournament. Fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and tenth seed Flavio Cobolli are scheduled to meet in one of Wednesday's quarter-finals.
Zverev is positioned on the opposite side of the draw and would not face either player until the final.
Zverev reached the quarter-finals with relative ease, dropping only one set across four matches.
In contrast, Jodar had endured two five-set matches and spent nearly 13 hours on court, approximately four hours more than Zverev.
Despite this, Jodar started strong by breaking to lead 5-2 in the opening set. However, Zverev capitalized on Jodar's nerves as the Spaniard attempted to serve out the set.
Zverev leveled the set and then dominated the tie-break. Jodar, competing in only his second Grand Slam main draw, began to fade thereafter.
From the second set onward, Zverev maintained control, concluding the match emphatically with a powerful forehand.
