Introduction of Video Review Technology at Wimbledon

Wimbledon will implement video review technology this year, enabling players to challenge judgment calls made by the chair umpire, according to an announcement from the tournament’s organisers.

Scope of Video Reviews and Limitations

Players will not be permitted to challenge decisions made by the electronic line calling (ELC) system, which was introduced at Wimbledon last year. However, video reviews will be available to verify other specific situations, such as whether a ball has bounced twice or if it has touched a player’s racket or body.

“Players will be allowed to review specific judgement calls made by the chair umpire (such as, for example, ‘not-up’, ‘foul shot’, ‘touch’) either on a point-ending call, when a player immediately stops play, or immediately after the completion of a point (in the case of hindrance),” the All England Lawn and Croquet Club (AELTC) said in a statement. “Players will not be limited in the number of reviews they can request.”

Implementation and Additional Features

The video review system will be introduced on six show courts, including Centre Court and Court One. Additionally, visual indicators for the ELC will be added, with scoreboards on all courts displaying “out” and “fault” calls to enhance clarity for players and spectators.

The 2023 Wimbledon Championships are scheduled to begin on 29 June.
