Sinner Completes Hard-Court Trophy Set with Indian Wells Win
Jannik Sinner secured the season-ending ATP Finals title without dropping a set, further cementing his status among tennis elites. The 24-year-old Italian became the youngest man to claim the full collection of hard-court trophies by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells final.
World number two Sinner overcame the resurgent Russian with scores of 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4) in a match lasting just under two hours under the intense Californian heat. Throughout the match, Sinner did not face a single break point and lost only four points on his first serve.
This victory marked Sinner's first title of the year and the 25th of his career. Notably, he did not drop a set en route to the championship.
Hard Court Grand Slam and Masters 1000 Titles
Sinner has previously won both hard court Grand Slam titles, securing the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025, as well as the US Open in 2024. Additionally, he has claimed all six Masters 1,000 titles played on hard courts, including Miami, Toronto, Cincinnati, Shanghai, Paris, and now Indian Wells. He has also triumphed at the season-ending ATP Finals.
Only Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have matched this comprehensive achievement. Andre Agassi, meanwhile, won the five Masters 1,000 events held on hard courts during his career, alongside both majors and the ATP Finals.
Sinner's Season and Head-to-Head Record
This Indian Wells title is Sinner's first of the year. Earlier in the season, his Australian Open title defense ended in a thrilling five-set semi-final loss to Djokovic in January. Sinner also extended his dominant head-to-head record against Medvedev, winning nine of their last ten encounters.
Despite his defeat, Medvedev is set to re-enter the top 10 rankings when they are updated on Monday. The former US Open champion nearly missed the tournament due to being stranded in Dubai amid ongoing Middle East conflicts. Upon arrival in the USA, Medvedev demonstrated his high level with a strong semi-final win over world number one Carlos Alcaraz.
Match Details and Performance
On Sunday, Sinner's commanding serve was a decisive factor. He won 43 of 47 first-serve points, delivered 10 aces, and secured 60% of points behind his second serve, maintaining control throughout the match.
Medvedev saved the only two break points in the final and nearly forced a third set by taking a 4-0 lead in the tie-break. However, Sinner responded with seven consecutive points to close out the match and claim back-to-back Masters 1,000 titles without dropping a set.
Djokovic Withdraws from Miami Open
In related news, world number three Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from this week's Miami Open due to injury. The Serbian star, a six-time Miami champion and last year's runner-up to Jakub Mensik, cited a right shoulder injury as the reason for his withdrawal from the hard-court event starting Monday.
