Sinner Cautious Ahead of Wimbledon Final Against Zverev

Jannik Sinner aims to defend his Wimbledon title against Alexander Zverev, who recently won his first Grand Slam at the French Open. Both players are in top form, with strong serving and return stats setting up a highly anticipated final.

Upcoming 15th Meeting Between Sinner and Zverev

Alexander Zverev (left) and Jannik Sinner are preparing for their 15th encounter on the professional tennis circuit.

Recent results might suggest that Jannik Sinner should approach the Wimbledon final with confidence, given his dominant record over Alexander Zverev. However, Zverev presents a unique challenge.

World number one Sinner is striving to become only the 10th man in the Open era to successfully defend the men's singles title at Wimbledon, having secured his first championship last summer by defeating Carlos Alcaraz.

The 24-year-old Italian has won all nine of their previous meetings, including the last six without dropping a set.

Despite this, Sinner remains cautious about Zverev, who recently claimed his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, ending a long wait for a major victory.

"Whatever happened in the past between me and him, it happened. In between, he won a Grand Slam in Paris, which gave him a lot of confidence," Sinner said.
"He is a tough player to play against. He was before, but now even more. He's very relaxed on court at the moment.
"I will try to do the best I can but it's going to be very, very tough - very different than all the other matches we have played."

Zverev's Breakthrough Grand Slam Victory

For many years, Zverev was considered one of the best male players without a major title. However, the 29-year-old German secured his maiden Grand Slam by defeating Italy's Flavio Cobolli in the Roland Garros final, marking his 41st major appearance.

"I stay focused. I stay hungry. I want more. I want to continue playing at the best level and continue winning. On Sunday I have another big chance," Zverev stated.
"Once you win a major you know how to do it and you feel like you can do it again.
"You have this feeling inside of you."

Sinner's Dominant Wimbledon Semi-Final Performance

Zverev and Sinner are currently the most in-form players on tour this season, each having won 40 or more matches in 2026. This performance will be reflected in the rankings, with Zverev set to rise to world number two on Monday.

Sinner is aiming for his fifth Grand Slam title after delivering a commanding performance to defeat Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon semi-final, halting Djokovic's pursuit of a record 25th major.

The Italian displayed ruthless efficiency in overcoming Djokovic in straight sets, despite Djokovic being viewed as Sinner's most significant obstacle.

Before Wimbledon, Sinner had not competed since a surprising early exit at the French Open, where he physically struggled in the heat and lost to Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo despite leading by two sets and 5-1.

Similar to his response after last year's French Open final loss to Alcaraz, Sinner has rebounded from adversity to position himself on the cusp of another major title.

Since the start of the 2024 season, Sinner has reached seven Grand Slam finals and leads the tour in singles titles won in 2026, having captured all five Masters 1000 events during an exceptional season.

Zverev Advances to Wimbledon Final

Zverev ended British wildcard Arthur Fery's unexpected run in the semi-finals, securing his fourth straight-set victory in five matches as his pursuit of a first Wimbledon title gained momentum.

With his Roland Garros triumph, Zverev ended a streak of nine consecutive Grand Slam tournaments won by either Sinner or Alcaraz. He now aims to become the first man in the Open era to win his second major singles title immediately following his first.

However, Zverev has yet to win a tour-level title on grass and would become only the fourth player in the Open era to claim their first such title at Wimbledon.

This tournament marks Zverev's least successful Grand Slam in terms of matches won, having previously exited in the first round last year, the only major where he had not reached the final.

Sinner's winning streak over Zverev dates back to 2023, when Zverev prevailed in five sets in the US Open fourth round.

This will be their first meeting at Wimbledon and on grass courts, though Sinner won their most recent major final encounter at last year's Australian Open.

Both players have advanced through recent rounds largely due to strong serving, a factor that will be critical in the final.

They have each won over 90% of their service games, but Sinner has won a higher percentage of points on his first serve (85%) and has recorded 113 aces compared to Zverev's 87.

Sinner: Serve quality - 8.7; 1st serves in - 66%; 1st serve points won - 85%; service games won - 94%; aces - 113. Zverev: Serve quality - 9.2; 1st serves in - 74%; 1st serve points won - 81%; sevice games won - 95%; aces - 87.

Zverev's serve quality during the Championships is rated higher than Sinner's (9.2 versus 8.7), and he has recorded the highest average speeds on both his first (133 mph) and second (118 mph) serves.

However, he faces an opponent whom 24-time major winner Djokovic has declared the best returner currently in the sport.

Sinner has outperformed Zverev in all return metrics this fortnight, with an overall return quality of 8.1 compared to Zverev's 7.3.

Sinner's forehand (8.5) and backhand (8.2) quality ratings also surpass Zverev's (8.3 and 8.1 respectively).

Sinner: Return quality - 8.1; returns in - 71%; return points won - 39%; forehand quality - 8.5; backhand quality - 8.2. Zverev: Return quality - 7.3; returns in - 67%; return points won - 38%; forehand quality - 8.3; backhand quality - 8.1.

Both players possess two of the highest overall performance ratings at this year's Wimbledon as they prepare for Sunday's final showdown.
