Raducanu's Return to Action Ends in First-Round Defeat

Emma Raducanu experienced a close first-round loss in Strasbourg as she made her comeback following an absence of over two months from the WTA Tour.

The British number one had been recuperating from a post-viral illness and had not competed since her third-round loss to Amanda Anisimova at Indian Wells in March.

Receiving a wildcard entry for the WTA 500 tournament in Strasbourg, Raducanu's return did not unfold as hoped, as she was defeated 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) by French player Diane Parry.

This result means Raducanu will have participated in only one clay-court match prior to the French Open, the year's second Grand Slam event, which commences on Sunday.

Following a 10-week hiatus from the Tour, Raducanu's world ranking has dropped from 23rd to 37th, resulting in her not being seeded at Roland Garros.

Match Details and Performance Analysis

In her first match since reuniting with coach Andrew Richardson—who guided her to the US Open title as a teenage qualifier—Raducanu began strongly in France. She executed powerful backhand winners down the line and moved agilely around the court, breaking Parry's serve to lead 4-2.

However, double faults began to affect her game, allowing Parry to recover and eventually secure the first set.

During the second set, Raducanu saved five break points early to prevent Parry from gaining a significant advantage. She briefly regained momentum by breaking first, but Parry immediately broke back.

Parry then broke again to lead 5-4, but Raducanu held her serve to deny Parry two opportunities to serve out the match, forcing a tie-break.

After a moment of frustration where Parry hit the ball into the stands, she composed herself and ultimately closed out the straight-sets victory after two hours and 26 minutes.

Looking Ahead to the French Open

Although the loss restricts Raducanu's preparation for the French Open, there are encouraging aspects for the British player as she heads to Paris.

She appeared relaxed with Richardson providing instructions and encouragement from the player's box. Raducanu demonstrated resilience by fending off 16 break points and maintaining competitiveness against Parry until the match's conclusion.

Parry will face either China's Shuai Zhang in the second round, following Zhang's win over Spain's Cristina Bucsa 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5.
