Norrie suffers rare first-round Wimbledon defeat

Cameron Norrie experienced a rare first-round loss at Wimbledon, falling in a demanding five-set match to qualifier Michael Zheng, marking a disappointing start for British competitors on the opening day of the Championships.

Norrie was the sole British seeded player remaining in either singles draw after Emma Raducanu withdrew just before the tournament began.

The world number 29, frequently the last British player standing in Grand Slam events, was twice caught by American Zheng after taking an initial set lead, ultimately losing 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 7-6 (10-4) in a four-hour contest.

This marks Norrie's first first-round exit at Wimbledon since 2018; he reached the semi-finals in 2022 and the quarter-finals the previous year.

The 30-year-old was one of six British players defeated on the opening day, with further setback as Jack Draper withdrew 24 hours before his first match due to injury.

Harriet Dart narrowly falls to Ostapenko

Harriet Dart mounted a determined comeback but was ultimately defeated 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 by former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Originally scheduled to play on Court 17 on Monday, their match was moved to Court One following Raducanu's withdrawal.

Wildcard Dart ensured spectators on the show court witnessed an engaging contest, pushing world number 31 Ostapenko to a deciding set in a two-and-a-half-hour match.

Ostapenko will next face either Croatian Antonia Ruzic or compatriot Darja Semenistaja, the lucky loser who replaced Raducanu in the draw.

Other British players face tough challenges

Seventeen-year-old British wildcard Mika Stojsavljevic was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by 2021 Olympic champion and 11th seed Belinda Bencic.

Felix Gill and Max Basing both lost on their Grand Slam main-draw debuts, falling to 23rd seed Rafael Nadal and qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki, respectively.

Alicia Dudeney, also making her main-draw major debut, was beaten 6-3, 6-3 by American Alycia Parks.

Consequently, British hopes on the opening day now rest on teenagers Hannah Klugman, Mimi Xu, Francesca Jones, Oliver Tarvet, and Jack Pinnington Jones.

Across both singles draws, 21 British players are competing, with 18 facing opponents ranked inside the world's top 55.
