Boulter's French Open Campaign Ends in Third Round Bid
Katie Boulter aimed to reach the third round at Roland Garros for the first time but was defeated in a deciding set by 28th seed Anastasia Potapova, concluding British participation in the singles events at the French Open.
Alongside Boulter, Francesca Jones was eliminated in the second round, while Emma Raducanu, Cameron Norrie, Jacob Fearnley, and Toby Samuel exited in the first round.
Boulter secured the first set in a match marked by seven breaks of serve but was unable to maintain momentum as Potapova, who found consistency on her serve, broke Boulter twice in each of the following sets to claim a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Potapova will face defending champion Coco Gauff in the third round, seeking to advance to the second week of a major tournament for only the second time in her career.
Boulter had progressed to the second round after a three-set match against teenage American wildcard Akasha Urhobo. However, her performance on Monday was marred by poor serving and numerous groundstroke errors. The 29-year-old committed 35 unforced errors, including seven double faults, against 24 winners and was broken five times.
The match against Potapova reflected similar struggles, but unlike Urhobo, the 25-year-old Russian-born Austrian, enjoying a career-best clay-court season that elevated her ranking from outside the top 90 to 30th, capitalized on Boulter's inconsistencies.
Boulter held serve in the opening game of the first set before a sequence of six consecutive service breaks ensued. She eventually closed the set with her fourth break of serve.
In the second set, Potapova broke twice within the first five games, including a break to love caused by a double fault from Boulter. Despite saving three set points while narrowing the deficit from 5-1 to 5-4, Boulter was forced into a deciding set.
Potapova was broken only once in the final two sets and converted both break points in the third set to secure the win decisively.
Challenges on Clay and Serving Issues
Boulter has historically struggled on clay, winning her first WTA Tour-level match on the surface only in 2025. Despite a record of just four clay-court wins across five tournaments this season, she believes she is making progress.
"I have to keep reminding myself that I got my first win on clay last year and I'm here now testing some of the better players on a clay court and that is important to me," Boulter told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"I'm taking the steps towards where I feel like I need to be on a clay court. It's taking time but I do think that today was one of the better matches I've played.
"I think I found my identity really well on the court and I just went after it. I started to commit to my shots and see where I was winning points and start gravitating towards that more."
Her serve, however, was a significant weakness against Potapova. Boulter recorded 10 double faults compared to one ace, had a first-serve percentage of 54%, won only 36% of points on her second serve, and 16 of her 51 unforced errors were not groundstrokes.
"I've hit a couple of double faults in big moments but, at the same time, I think I'm also trying to improve my serve," she said during her main press conference.
"I'm not necessarily holding back, and I'm not just trying to push the ball in the court and run.
"I'm pleased with the way it's going towards my goals. It's a work in progress. It's going to be good days and bad days. I think I'm pretty level-headed about it."
Boulter has been contending with illness in recent days and stated that her primary focus now is regaining full fitness ahead of the upcoming grass-court season.
Other Tournament Highlights
While several top seeds, including Jannik Sinner, were eliminated early in the men's draw, world number one Aryna Sabalenka and 2025 champion Coco Gauff advanced comfortably with straight-set victories.
Sabalenka, pursuing her first French Open title, won five consecutive games to take the first set and established a 3-0 lead in the second against France's Elsa Jacquemot. Despite being broken while serving for the match, she immediately broke back and converted her first match point to win 7-5, 6-2. Sabalenka will face Daria Kasatkina in the third round.
Fourth seed Gauff defeated Mayar Sherif 6-3, 6-2, losing only five games. The two-time Grand Slam singles champion was broken four times but responded with seven breaks of serve.
