Katie Boulter Achieves Career-Best Victory Over Elena Rybakina
British No 3 Katie Boulter delivered the finest performance of her career on Friday, overcoming world No 2 and reigning champion Elena Rybakina in a grueling match. Boulter secured a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory, marking the biggest win of her career and the highest-ranked opponent defeated by any British player to date.
Boulter’s triumph came after a demanding day, as she had earlier defeated Jaqueline Cristian of Romania 6-1, 6-3. The match against Rybakina was the longest of her career and showcased her resilience and determination.
“Honestly, I’m not really sure what to say, but I really feel like this win definitely goes towards the crowd that got me through it tonight and stayed out here,” Boulter said. “The atmosphere was absolutely incredible. I just tried to tell myself to keep backing myself and go for it. If you don’t go for it, then you’re going to regret the things that you’ve worked so hard for. “I’m standing here a winner, and it’s because I trusted my game, I trusted my coaching team, who were always with me and pushing me. So yeah, I’m so proud of today.”
During the match, Rybakina initially dominated her service games, conceding only four points across five games and facing no break points. In contrast, Boulter’s service games were fiercely contested, with Rybakina unable to convert any of the nine break points she earned. The match’s momentum shifted dramatically at 5-5 in the first set when Rybakina committed a series of unforced errors, including a double fault on break point, allowing Boulter to break serve. Boulter then held her serve to close out the set.
Rybakina responded strongly in the second set, overpowering Boulter and taking it 6-2. However, Boulter regrouped in the third set, improving her serve and building rhythm in her games. Both players, known for their height and powerful serves, fought intensely, but Boulter’s boldness and cleaner play in the decisive moments earned her the victory. She served out the match emphatically to claim her biggest career win.
Emma Raducanu Advances with Strong Performance Against Sorana Cirstea
Earlier on Friday, Emma Raducanu delivered one of her best performances of the season, defeating the seventh-seeded Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-2. Cirstea has been one of the most in-form players this year, making Raducanu’s straight-sets victory notable as she returned to the quarter-finals on the grass courts of Queen’s Club.

Raducanu’s next opponent will be the winner of the quarter-final match between Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova and Boulter. Due to a congested and rain-delayed schedule, their match was postponed at the end of Friday, meaning the winner will have to play two matches on Saturday.
Additional Tournament Highlights and Scheduling Challenges
Kamilla Rakhimova reached the quarter-finals by defeating Britain’s Harriet Dart 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. The winner of her match against Raducanu or Boulter will face 18-year-old sixth seed Iva Jovic, who recently secured her first top-five win over Amanda Anisimova, the second seed and world No 5.
Rain throughout Thursday caused all matches to be postponed, resulting in a hectic Friday schedule where all second-round winners were slated to play twice. Five matches were scheduled on Andy Murray Arena, and by the time Rybakina and Boulter began their match at precisely 5:41 pm, the likelihood of completing all matches that day was slim.
Raducanu was expected to play on Court 1, the tournament’s second court, but broadcast contracts prohibit live coverage of this court. Organizers hoped Raducanu would start her match in time, but the delay led to her match being postponed to Saturday.
Saturday’s schedule will be demanding, with the winner of the Raducanu-Boulter-Rakhimova quarter-final facing Jovic, one of the sport’s promising young talents. Despite the challenges, Raducanu appeared relaxed and content as she observed the final set of Boulter’s match, marking a positive day with her victory over a top-20 opponent for the first time in over a year.
This is the first time in more than a year that Raducanu has defeated a top 20 opponent in Cirstea, the world No 18.
