Jones' French Open Journey Concludes
Francesca Jones, who had not previously won a main-draw match at a Grand Slam before this year's French Open, saw her breakthrough run come to an end against Marie Bouzkova. This result leaves Katie Boulter as the sole remaining British singles player at Roland Garros.
The 25-year-old Jones secured an emotional first Grand Slam victory by defeating Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia in the opening round. However, she was defeated 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) by the Czech Republic's 27th seed Bouzkova on Wednesday.
Ranked world number 102, Jones competed closely with former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Bouzkova, rallying from a 4-1 deficit in the second set. She twice had opportunities to serve out the set but was unable to capitalize.
"I love the clay. This one will hurt as much as losing in Wimbledon does for me," Jones said.
"I think I'm always going to make opponents feel uncomfortable.
"I don't care what the score is. I will throw everything at you. I will throw every ounce of my mentality I've got at you, physically what I can."
Jones' First Grand Slam Victory
On Sunday, Jones celebrated her first win in her seventh first-round appearance across the sport's four Grand Slams, marking her debut victory at Roland Garros. The British number four described overcoming the challenge of defeating former top-10 player Haddad Maia as "arguably the hardest moment of my career."
Earlier this year, Jones endured lingering concussion symptoms following an unusual gym accident. The locking mechanism on a leg-press machine failed, causing a 45kg weight to fall onto her head and knee. This incident occurred just as she was nearing a return to full fitness after her Australian Open campaign ended in January due to a torn muscle in her hip.
Looking Ahead to Grass Court Season
Following her French Open exit, Jones will now focus on the grass court season and aims to secure her first main draw win at Wimbledon.
"I think this week proves that I'm always going to back myself, even if I have not got maybe that track record similar as last year when I was coming into the grass with quite a lot of wins," she added.
"I do trust my mentality, so hopefully I'll put myself in the position over the grass as well to keep winning matches."
