Jack Draper Overcomes Roberto Bautista Agut to Begin Indian Wells Title Defense
Jack Draper, the British men’s No 1, rallied from a set down to defeat Roberto Bautista Agut 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in his opening match at Indian Wells, marking the start of his title defense. Draper is in the process of recovering from an eight-month absence due to an arm injury and recently returned to ATP Tour competition at Dubai last week, where he exited in the second round. This match was his first at Indian Wells since winning the title last year.
The 24-year-old, who continues to wear a protective sleeve on his left arm, appeared unsettled during the first set, with several unforced errors contributing to his 3-6 loss. However, Draper shifted momentum at the beginning of the second set by adopting a more aggressive approach. A series of powerful returns culminated in a backhand winner down the line, allowing him to break Bautista Agut and take a 2-0 lead.
Maintaining his confidence, Draper held serve to level the match and then pushed ahead to 5-2 with another service game won without conceding a point. He closed out the second set decisively.
In the final set, Draper varied his tactics effectively, securing breaks in the third and seventh games to establish a 5-2 lead. Bautista Agut fought back, earning three break-point opportunities in the subsequent game, but Draper saved each with powerful serves. Ultimately, Draper sealed a hard-fought victory after one hour and 46 minutes on court.
Draper Reflects on His Return and Performance
Following the match, Draper spoke about his feelings and ongoing recovery during the on-court interview:
“It felt amazing. I have really felt good here,” Draper said. “It is good to be back somewhere I have great memories, but at the same time I was a little bit under-prepared because of the amount of tennis I have missed.
“I was coming out today against a really formidable opponent in Roberto Bautista. The first set was a bit edgy, but then I have managed to find a little bit of spark.
“Hopefully I can keep on progressing from here with how I want to play. These wins are massive for me, especially on my return to the tour.
“The injury I had, it wasn’t like a couple of weeks – it was eight months. I missed so much competitive tennis and I do feel that. I feel a little bit off. My levels in practice are always good, but when it comes to the match court, I am definitely a bit in and out with my consistency.
“But I think that is going to come the more I play, the more I get myself out in front of these top players. I am improving most days, so hopefully I can just carry on doing what I do with the right attitude and give myself the best chance of going a long way in these events.”
