Jack Draper Exits Dubai Tennis Championships in Second Round

British number one Jack Draper was defeated by French player Arthur Rinderknech in the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships, marking his return to the ATP Tour after a six-month hiatus.

Draper, who last competed at the US Open, began his comeback from injury with a straight-sets victory over Quentin Halys on Monday. However, the 24-year-old's run ended two days later with a 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 loss to world number 31 Rinderknech.

Once ranked as high as fourth in the world last summer, Draper has dropped to 15th following an extended absence due to a bruised bone in his service arm. The injury, which originated during the clay-court season in April, worsened over time and forced him to withdraw before his second-round match at the US Open in August, effectively ending his 2025 season.

After a 164-day break, Draper returned to competitive play by winning a match for Great Britain in this month's Davis Cup qualifiers.

"I am really proud to make a winning return to the tour following a lot of down moments [during] the last eight months," Draper said.

In his match against Rinderknech, Draper started strongly on serve, losing just two points in his first four games. However, he failed to convert his initial two break points in the 11th game, allowing Rinderknech to break serve and take the first set.

In the second set, Draper faced pressure early, saving three break points to level the score at 3-3. Demonstrating resilience, he lost only one point across his next three service games and maintained control during the tie-break, winning four of the first five points to claim the set.

The deciding set saw Rinderknech secure a crucial break of serve, which proved sufficient to win the match and advance to the quarter-finals, where he will face Russian fifth seed Andrey Rublev.

Positives to Take from Draper's Tour Comeback - Analysis

Draper's opening match win against Halys showcased his quality, though he lacked the sharpness needed to overcome Rinderknech. Wearing a compression sleeve on his affected left arm, Draper displayed powerful shots from his dominant side, including a notable 100mph forehand that passed Rinderknech.

He has also adopted a platform serve stance, standing with feet slightly wider to facilitate smoother weight transfer and reduce strain on his bruised humerus. This adjustment indicates Draper's awareness of the need to manage his injury carefully.

Despite the loss, Draper pushed a well-prepared Rinderknech to the limit but was unable to capitalize on opportunities against his opponent's strong service game. Rinderknech's varied and precise play on the fast surface posed challenges, while Draper's limited recent court time was evident in some inconsistent returns during critical moments.

Once the initial disappointment fades, Draper is likely to view his progress in Dubai positively, provided he recovers without further complications.

Looking ahead, Draper will compete at Indian Wells to defend the most significant title of his career. The valuable match experience gained in Dubai marks an important step in what is expected to be a patient and gradual comeback.
