Harriet Dart Triumphs in French Open Qualifying First Round
Britain's Harriet Dart overcame a challenging match to defeat China's Yue Yuan in the opening round of French Open qualifying, while Dan Evans was eliminated in his first match.
Evans, the oldest competitor in the men's singles qualifying at 35 years old, was defeated 6-4, 6-4 by the youngest player in the draw, 17-year-old French wildcard Daniel Jade. Evans, a former world number 21 who turned professional in 2006—three years before Jade's birth in 2009—secured an early break in the first set. However, Jade responded by winning three consecutive games to claim the set and later broke Evans at 4-4 in the second set to secure victory.
Currently ranked 211th, Evans has not participated in the main draw of a Grand Slam since receiving a wildcard for Wimbledon last year, where he exited in the second round.
Dart Battles Through Three Sets to Progress
Dart required over three hours to overcome Chinese 10th seed Yuan, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The 29-year-old twice recovered from being a break down in the second set before dominating the final set. Dart will face Spain's Leyre Romero Gormaz in the second round.
Additional British Successes in Qualifying
Other British players Toby Samuel and Jay Clarke also recorded victories on the Paris clay courts.
Samuel won a tightly contested first set tie-break, 7-6 (13-11), before defeating American seventh seed Martin Damm 7-6 (13-11), 6-2. He will next face Belgian veteran and former world number seven David Goffin, who plans to retire at the end of the season.
Clarke secured a straight-sets win over Australian 23rd seed Dane Sweeney, 6-2, 6-2, and will meet French player Thomas Faurel in the next round.
Qualifying Format and British Main Draw Entrants
Players must win three matches in qualifying to earn a place in the French Open main draw, which starts on Sunday, 24 May.
British players Emma Raducanu, Cameron Norrie, Katie Boulter, Francesca Jones, and Jacob Fearnley have direct entry into the main draw. However, Jack Draper and Sonay Kartal are absent from the tournament due to injury.
