Felix Gill Falls Short in French Open Qualifying

Felix Gill, ranked 237th in the world, will have to delay his Grand Slam singles debut after losing in the final round of French Open qualifying. The British player was defeated 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 by France's Kyrian Jacquet, preventing him from joining fellow Briton Toby Samuel in the main draw at Roland Garros.

The men's and women's singles main draw begins in Paris on Sunday. Among 12 British players attempting to qualify, only Samuel succeeded in advancing through all three qualifying rounds. This marks Samuel's first appearance in the main draw of a singles major.

In total, six British players will compete in the singles main draw: Toby Samuel, Cameron Norrie, Jacob Fearnley, Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter, and Francesca Jones.

The first set on Court Suzanne Lenglen was closely contested. Gill immediately broke back after losing serve in the third game. However, Jacquet gained a 3-0 lead in the tie-break and maintained his advantage to secure the set, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Jacquet continued his momentum into the second set, delivering the decisive break at 3-2 and ultimately serving out the match on his second match point four games later.

Of the six British singles players, only Cameron Norrie is seeded. Norrie will face Paraguay's Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the opening round. Jacob Fearnley is set to play Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerundolo, with a potential second-round match against world number one Jannik Sinner anticipated.

Emma Raducanu has been drawn against Argentine clay-court specialist Solana Sierra in a challenging first-round match. Katie Boulter will compete against American wildcard Akasha Urhobo, while Francesca Jones faces Brazil's 2023 semi-finalist Beatriz Haddad Maia.
