Raducanu Ends Losing Streak with Straight-Sets Victory
Emma Raducanu secured a 6-1, 6-3 win over Anastasia Zakharova to advance to the last 32 at the Indian Wells tournament.
The British No 1 entered the WTA 1000 event on a three-match losing streak and was determined to regain her form following her split from coach Francisco Roig in January.
Former Coach Mark Petchey Returns to Support Raducanu
Mark Petchey, a former coach of Raducanu, returned to her corner on an ad-hoc basis as she faced qualifier Zakharova at the BNP Paribas Open.
Raducanu started strongly, delivering an ace in her opening service game, signaling her intent. Ranked world No 24, she immediately broke Zakharova’s serve and established a 3-0 lead.
Zakharova responded by winning her next service game, but Raducanu fired another ace before breaking again, earning approval from Petchey. The first set concluded in 32 minutes.
Dominant Performance in Second Set Despite Minor Challenges
In the second set, Raducanu secured a break in the third game and maintained pressure with powerful ball-striking that Zakharova struggled to counter.
During the eighth game, Raducanu faced a brief challenge, rallying from 15-40 down to hold serve.
Although Zakharova managed to break Raducanu’s serve when the British player was poised to serve for the match, Raducanu quickly regrouped and won the subsequent game to close out the match.
This victory marks a positive start for Raducanu at Indian Wells as she looks to build momentum in the tournament.
