Daniel Tschofenig Disqualified for Oversized Boots
Austrian ski jumper Daniel Tschofenig expressed regret after being disqualified from the men's large hill individual event at the Winter Olympics due to wearing boots that exceeded the size regulations by four millimetres.
The 23-year-old athlete, who has achieved 21 World Cup podium finishes and is the 2025 World Cup champion, had successfully qualified for Saturday's final. However, his aspirations for an Olympic medal were ended by this equipment violation.
"I used new shoes in training which, by the way, I wasn't very happy with, but I kept them," Tschofenig said.
"Unfortunately, I was naive and didn't measure it. Extremely stupid of me, there was just so much stress going on. But rules are rules."
Tschofenig recorded a score of 137.7 in the first round, but the discovery of his boots being four millimetres too large led to his immediate disqualification. This incident allowed Slovakia's Hektor Kapustik to advance to the final.
In the competition, Slovenia's Domen Prevc secured the gold medal, Ren Nikaido of Japan earned silver, and Poland's Kacper Tomasiak took bronze.
Additional Context and Related Incidents
This disqualification follows reports that some male ski jumpers have been injecting hyaluronic acid into their penises prior to suit measurements, aiming to enhance performance.
On the following day, USA ski jumper Annika Belshaw, also 23, was disqualified from the women's large hill individual event because her skis exceeded the maximum length by more than one centimetre. Like Tschofenig, Belshaw had qualified for the final but was unable to compete due to the equipment violation.
