Coach Peters to Leave Hull KR
Willie Peters, who retired as a player at the age of 25 due to injury, will leave Super League champions Hull KR at the end of the season to pursue a coaching career in his native Australia.
The 47-year-old coach has revitalised Hull KR since taking charge in 2022, leading the team to a treble last year, which included securing their first Super League title since 1985.
Reports indicate that Peters is expected to take charge of the new franchise PNG Chiefs, who are set to join the NRL in 2028.
"I've made no secret of my desire to coach in the NRL as the next step of my career. However, it makes this decision no less difficult," Peters said.
"I want to thank the board, the players and all of the staff for their support and commitment during four wonderful years where I have developed as a coach and as a person."
Hull KR currently hold all four major titles available to Super League clubs after defeating the Brisbane Broncos to win the World Club Challenge in February.
After five games this season, Hull KR sit eighth in the Super League table and are scheduled to face their rivals Hull FC on Friday.
In a statement, Hull KR said,
"Willie will leave with the very best wishes of everyone at the club after four years of being the most successful coach in our modern history, taking us to the very pinnacle of the sport as world champions."
'The Man with the Magic Touch'
Peters' influence has been strongly felt in East Hull. His enthusiasm for the game, respect for the competition, and keen eye have been instrumental in launching Hull KR's recent success.
Those familiar with Peters often describe him with words such as meticulous, diligent, and thorough. He is known as a coach who leaves little to chance, preparing players with detailed plans and maintaining a personal approach.
By defeating Wigan in the Super League Grand Final, Hull KR became only the fifth team to have their name engraved on the trophy.
However, Peters' impact extends beyond the silverware, marking his tenure at Craven Park as a period of significant achievement and growth.
