A remarkable defensive performance combined with a precise attacking display by Wigan Warriors against their derby rivals St Helens secured their third Challenge Cup final appearance in five years.

Matt Peet's team endured sustained pressure from Saints for much of the match at Halliwell Jones Stadium but capitalised on every attacking opportunity in the first half.

Jack Farrimond opened the scoring during Wigan's first significant attack. Following two outstanding tries by Zach Eckersley, Jake Wardle intercepted a pass to extend Wigan's lead to 22 points by halftime.

Saints had previously overcome a 14-point deficit to win the Good Friday derby and had been on a five-match winning streak across all competitions. However, Wigan were determined to prevent a repeat outcome.

In the second half, Wigan absorbed all the pressure Saints could apply. Frustration grew for Paul Rowley's side, culminating in Jack Welsby being sin-binned. Farrimond and Adam Keighran sealed the victory with two late tries.

Despite Saints entering the semi-final as the in-form team, Wigan ended their own two-match losing streak with a win over Bradford Bulls the previous week and were clearly motivated for revenge.

The Red V aimed to avoid falling behind this time, dominating early possession but encountering a well-organised and resilient Wigan defence.

Defensive Resilience and Clinical Attacking

Wigan's defensive solidity was crucial in their Challenge Cup semi-final win over long-time rivals St Helens.

Wigan held firm and when they advanced, they executed a superb team try. Brad O'Neill broke through and exchanged passes with Jai Field before delivering to Farrimond, who scored.

Keighran converted the try and added a penalty goal. Exceptional defensive efforts then prevented Lewis Murphy and Daryl Clark from scoring.

Farrimond was influential on both ends of the field. His delicate kick led to the next try: Keighran was blocked as he slid in, but the ball spilled loose, allowing Eckersley to complete the score.

Wigan's attacking prowess was on display again as Eckersley finished another well-crafted move for his 20th try of the season. Just before halftime, Wardle intercepted a pass from Joe Shorrocks and sprinted away to extend the lead to an unassailable 22-0.

Saints continued to apply pressure and refused to relent. However, they struggled to find solutions as Wigan defended the edges with great effectiveness. Welsby's frustration led to a sin-bin for a rush into a ruck.

Wigan maintained their defensive discipline throughout the second half and finished strongly in the final five minutes. Farrimond completed a fine performance with a weaving try, and Keighran capitalised on a kick from Harry Smith to score another.
