Wales Squad Faces Dispute with WRU Before Nations Championship

Wales secured their third victory of the season by defeating the Barbarians at Twickenham. However, the squad's preparations for the Nations Championship were disrupted by a dispute with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) concerning match fees.

Steve Tandy's team is scheduled to play July Tests against Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa. Despite this, the build-up to the tournament was affected by off-field issues that were only resolved three days prior to the opening fixture.

Negotiations took place between the WRU and the Welsh Rugby Players' Association (WRPA) regarding "employment terms," culminating in an agreement late on Wednesday afternoon to ensure the Fiji game would proceed as planned.

Media Engagements Cancelled Amid Dispute

Wales had planned a press conference on Wednesday featuring two players to preview Saturday's opener at Cardiff City Stadium (14:10 BST). After a delay exceeding an hour, the playing squad chose not to attend the appointment due to the dispute with the WRU, resulting in its cancellation along with interviews scheduled with broadcaster S4C.

Coaching and Squad Updates

In related developments, Salvin has left Exeter to assume the Wales forwards coach position, while Wales will be without Exeter lock Jenkins for the summer Tests.

Resolution Reached Following Further Talks

Subsequent discussions occurred before a deal was finalized shortly before 17:00 BST, with players observed departing a meeting at the Vale Resort headquarters near Cardiff.

"Media access was postponed today due to ongoing negotiations between WRU representatives and the Welsh Rugby Players Association around employment terms for the new Nations Championship competition," read a joint statement from the WRU and WRPA.
"These negotiations have now been concluded to the satisfaction of all parties.
Training preparations for the upcoming match against Fiji at the Cardiff City Stadium have not been affected. Everyone involved is looking forward to a positive result on Saturday and a successful campaign."

Impact of Off-Field Issues on Squad

Although the training schedule remained unaffected, this episode adds to a series of challenges faced by the players, who have been burdened by off-field matters in recent years.

Strike action was narrowly averted on the eve of the home fixture against England during the 2023 Six Nations.

Tandy's tenure has also been influenced by uncertainty stemming from the WRU's proposal to reduce the number of men's professional sides from four to three, a plan intended for implementation by 2028.

Preparations and Upcoming Fixtures

The coaching staff and squad members were present at the Vale Resort on Wednesday. Thursday is not scheduled as a training day ahead of their opening fixture.

The head coach, who trimmed his squad to 33 players for the summer Tests on Tuesday, is expected to announce the team to face Fiji on Thursday morning before engaging with the media.

The captain's run, the squad's final preparation session, will take place at Cardiff City Stadium on Friday ahead of Saturday's game.

The opener will be followed by away Tests against Argentina in San Juan and South Africa in Durban. Wales enters these fixtures after winning an uncapped match against the Barbarians at Allianz Stadium.
