Josh Macleod Extends Scarlets Tenure

Scarlets captain Josh Macleod has agreed to a new contract to remain with the Welsh rugby team. The 29-year-old flanker, who has represented Wales in the 2026 Six Nations, has been a key player for the Scarlets since his debut in 2015, accumulating 148 appearances. He assumed the captaincy role in 2023, succeeding Jonathan Davies. The duration of Macleod's new deal has not been disclosed.

"The Scarlets has shaped me as a person from the moment I joined the academy at 16," said Macleod.

"To be here now as captain is something I'll never take lightly and it means a huge amount to me."

In addition to Macleod's contract renewal, Scarlets number eight Fletcher Anderson has also signed a new deal. Conversely, Wales wing Tom Rogers is set to transfer to the Ospreys at the end of the season, and South African hooker Marnus van der Merwe will join Munster.

Team Performance and Leadership

The Scarlets have experienced a difficult season, currently positioned 14th in the United Rugby Championship (URC) with four wins from 15 league matches. The Llanelli-based team also lost all four of their European Champions Cup fixtures.

"This season has tested us but also brought the group closer together," Macleod commented.

"We've shown glimpses of what we're capable of against top sides in the URC and Europe. The challenge now is turning those moments into consistency."

Macleod, who has earned five international caps, is recovering from a hamstring injury and aims to return before the season concludes.

"It's been frustrating being sidelined during the last couple of weeks," he said.

"I'm not far away now and working hard to get back. Hopefully I can play my part towards the end of the season."

Endorsement from Scarlets Management

Scarlets interim director of rugby Nigel Davies praised Macleod's leadership qualities.

"He drives standards and represents what we want this team to stand for," Davies stated.

"Having players like Josh at the core of Scarlets is critical. He understands what it takes to perform and help build a team.

He leads through his actions, is brave in how he plays and has the mindset to keep pushing standards."
