RFU Maintains Support for Borthwick Amid Six Nations Setbacks

Steve Borthwick has faced scrutiny following England's disappointing Six Nations campaign, which saw the team suffer consecutive defeats against Scotland, Ireland, and Italy.

Despite the setbacks, Borthwick's employer, the Rugby Football Union (RFU), has expressed continued support for the England coach. However, the RFU has indicated that a comprehensive review of the poor Six Nations performance will take place after England's final-round match against France on Saturday.

England currently sit fifth in the Six Nations table, effectively out of contention for the title after three successive losses. Notably, the defeat to Italy marked England's first-ever loss to the Azzurri, a result that has intensified speculation regarding Borthwick's future as head coach.

RFU Chief Executive Comments on Team's Performance

"After a 12-match winning run, these past three results have been hugely disappointing, and we feel that just as much as everyone else,"

said Bill Sweeney, chief executive of the Rugby Football Union.

"Steve and his coaching team are working tirelessly to make improvements, and we remain fully committed to supporting them and the players as they face France this weekend and then look ahead to the Nations Championship.
Part of that support is being open about what hasn't gone right during this Six Nations and making sure everyone has a clear sense of how we move through those challenges together. That's something we'll be talking through and working on in the days and weeks ahead.
We will work together to understand and rectify why we have been unable to meet the expectations and anticipation going into these games.
England fans rightly expect a team that learns and grows through adversity, and we're confident this group will do everything they can to deliver that."

Borthwick Responds to Criticism Following Italy Defeat

Following the unexpected 23-18 loss to Italy in Rome—where England had previously maintained a 32-game winning streak—Borthwick addressed questions about his suitability for the coaching role.

"Absolutely,"

the 46-year-old coach responded when asked if he was the right man for the job.

"Right now this is a tough period, but what we will do is learn from it and make sure we are stronger going forward.
It is tough right now and we are not hiding away from the fact it is tough."

Looking Ahead

The England team and coaching staff are preparing to face France in their final Six Nations fixture, with the RFU emphasizing a commitment to reflection and improvement in the aftermath of the campaign.

The upcoming Nations Championship will also be a focus as the team seeks to rebuild and address the challenges highlighted during this difficult period.
