Ospreys delivered a significant setback to the Sharks' United Rugby Championship (URC) play-off ambitions with a closely contested victory at Electric Brewery Field in Bridgend.

Mark Jones' team moved ahead of the South African side in the standings, securing a hard-fought win by scoring three tries.

At halftime, Ospreys led 14-12, courtesy of tries from Wales internationals Dan Edwards and the inspirational captain Jac Morgan.

Sharks winger Ethan Hooker responded with a breakaway try in the final play of the first half, adding to flanker Phepsi Buthelezi's earlier score.

The Sharks began the second half strongly, but Ospreys struck back through replacement loose-head prop Garyn Phillips, who scored his first professional try. However, Phillips sustained an injury that forced the hosts to play the final quarter with 14 men due to uncontested scrums.

Buthelezi narrowed the gap with his second try, but the Sharks were unable to find a winning score, dropping below the 10th-place Ospreys. Both teams remain 12 points adrift of the top eight.

Player Movements and Context

Wales scrum-half Hardy recently signed a new deal with Ospreys, while Wales wing Rogers is set to join Ospreys from Scarlets.

Results elsewhere, including Connacht's surprise victory over the Stormers and Cardiff's comeback win against Scarlets, diminished both teams' play-off prospects prior to kick-off.

With ninth-place Connacht yet to face eighth-place Munster in the penultimate round, even maximum points in the remaining matches are unlikely to secure a play-off spot for either side.

Despite this, both teams were determined to maintain their play-off hopes for as long as possible.

Match Summary

Ospreys opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Dan Edwards executed a chip over the top and completed the move after passes from backs Iestyn Hopkins, Evardi Boshoff, and Dan Kasende.

The Sharks responded with a penalty kick to the corner, allowing flanker Buthelezi to power over for his fourth try in three games, making the score 7-5.

Ospreys regained momentum on the half-hour mark when captain Jac Morgan scored from a driving line-out, with Edwards converting from the right touchline to extend the lead to 14-5.

Ospreys sought a third try in the final play of the half but suffered a momentum shift when a loose ball led to a breakaway try by Sharks winger Ethan Hooker.

Early in the second half, Ospreys restored their nine-point advantage through replacement prop Garyn Phillips, who sprinted under the posts following an interception by the lively Dan Kasende.

However, Phillips faced significant pressure in his primary role after the introduction of Springbok props Ox Nche and Vincent Koch. The try scorer limped off following a heavy shove to the head. After a prolonged delay and much deliberation, uncontested scrums were introduced, reducing Ospreys to 14 men.

Buthelezi scored his second try with 12 minutes remaining from a driving line-out, bringing the score to 21-17, but the Sharks could not capitalize further.

Ospreys now prepare for a derby match against play-off hopefuls Cardiff on Friday night. Their owners, Y11 Sports & Media, remain officially engaged in discussions to acquire the Arms Park club from the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU).
