Ross Moriarty Receives Three-Game Ban After Red Card

Ross Moriarty has been suspended for three matches following his red card during Ospreys' defeat to Benetton last weekend. The Wales number eight, who had previously been sin-binned in the match, was sent off for a dangerous clearout while Ospreys were trailing 24-12.

A statement from the United Rugby Championship (URC) confirmed that Moriarty accepted responsibility for committing an act of foul play. The disciplinary panel initially deemed the incident deserving of a six-week ban. However, Moriarty's suspension was reduced to three matches due to his good disciplinary record, remorse, and exemplary conduct throughout the disciplinary process.

The ban may be further reduced to two matches if Moriarty completes the World Rugby Coaching Intervention Programme.

Impact on Upcoming Fixtures

Moriarty will miss Ospreys' upcoming game against Connacht on Saturday, as well as the Challenge Cup last-16 match against Ulster scheduled for Saturday, 4 April. If he does not complete the World Rugby course, he could also be sidelined for a potential Challenge Cup quarter-final or the United Rugby Championship game against the Sharks on 18 April.

Coach Mark Jones Comments on the Incident

Ospreys head coach Mark Jones provided insight into the circumstances surrounding Moriarty's sending off.

"It's quite a dynamic situation. The player there is bound to the tackle itself and there's not an opportunity for Ross to get his left arm through to get a good wrap, but he makes a really good attempt with his right arm and it's bound. But his height is the issue. If you look at it from the end-on camera, the player drops at the last second to his knees and that's the difference between hitting him on the shoulder and the head. When you are entering at the speed Ross was, it's going to be difficult to change his height. There is no malice there to damage the player, it was more around technically needing to be better."
