Edinburgh suffered a heavy defeat in Johannesburg as the Lions scored eight tries in a commanding display.

The loss leaves Sean Everitt's team with only two wins in their last eight matches, trailing the play-off positions by 12 points with five games remaining.

When Edinburgh last visited Johannesburg in October 2024, they endured one of their poorest performances under Everitt, trailing 48-0 at halftime before losing 55-21.

After 26 minutes in this match, with the Lions already having scored four tries, concerns arose that a similar outcome was unfolding.

Lions lock Ruan Venter opened the scoring, assisted by captain Francke Horn, who himself scored the second try in the 18th minute.

The third try was a remarkable effort: a break down the left by Sibabalwe Mahashe, who timed an offload perfectly to Darrien Landsberg, with the lock sprinting over from distance.

Scrum-half Morne van den Berg secured the fourth try as the Lions again breached Edinburgh's defense effortlessly. Fly-half Chris Smith initiated the move, passing to his half-back partner to score.

Edinburgh appeared poised to score before halftime. With Horn temporarily off the field, they had a scrum inside the Lions' 22-meter area and a man advantage.

However, a turnover allowed the Lions to counterattack, with Bronson Mills crossing to extend the lead to 35-0 at halftime.

With the game effectively decided at the break, Edinburgh showed more resistance in the second half, yet the Lions continued to outscore them.

Ewan Ashman put Edinburgh on the scoreboard following a driving maul, but the Lions soon energized the crowd again.

Fans initially thought the Lions had scored another try when Chris Smith executed an acrobatic inside flick pass, but the ball was already out of play.

Nonetheless, on the subsequent play, Smith's crossfield kick found Angelo Davids, who scored with a somersault finish.

The teams exchanged tries throughout the second half. Freddy Douglas scored for Edinburgh after a break by Charlie Shiel, and Davids secured his second try by capitalizing on a well-placed grubber kick from Mills.

Matt Currie responded for Edinburgh with a try after evading a tackle in midfield, offering hope for a bonus-point try.

However, the Lions maintained pressure, scoring their eighth try through substitute scrum-half Hasseim Paed, who exploited a gap beside a ruck.

While the fixture is challenging, hosted at the renowned Ellis Park Stadium, the heavy defeat reflects Edinburgh's current downward trend.

Nearly eighteen months after their last Johannesburg match, where they were defensively dismantled and lacked leadership, Edinburgh produced a similarly disappointing performance.
