Leinster Advance to Champions Cup Semi-Final After Dominant Second Half
Leinster, four-time European champions, overcame a sluggish first half to secure a comfortable victory over Sale Sharks, booking a home Champions Cup semi-final against Toulon.
The match began with Leinster holding a narrow 7-3 lead at halftime, courtesy of Dan Sheehan's converted try in the ninth minute. However, the second half saw Leinster elevate their performance significantly, scoring five additional tries to pull away from Sale.
Tries were scored by Hugo Keenan, Ryan Baird, Rieko Ioane, Tommy O'Brien, and Jamie Osborne. Sale's sole try came late in the game, through substitute Alex Wills, with approximately ten minutes remaining.
Leinster will face Toulon at the Aviva Stadium during the weekend of 2 and 3 May, after Toulon narrowly defeated Glasgow Warriors.
Sale Sharks Challenge Leinster Despite Difficult Season
Sale coach Alex Sanderson had emphasized that his team was not in Dublin "to make up the numbers." Despite a challenging season with only three wins in 12 Premiership games, Sale presented a competitive challenge to Leinster in the first half.
Sale were missing key England forwards Bevan Rodd and Luke Cowan-Dickie due to injury, and Nathan Jibulu was sidelined with a six-week suspension for biting.
Leinster faced early disruption when prop Alex Usanov exited the game after just four minutes due to injury. Nonetheless, they managed to take the lead when hooker Dan Sheehan scored under the posts.
Sale responded by maintaining defensive resilience, winning three penalty scrums and adding points through a George Ford penalty. The first half ended with Leinster leading 7-3 in challenging, greasy conditions.
Yellow Cards Shift Momentum in Leinster's Favor
Leinster capitalized on yellow cards shown to Sale players Dan du Preez and Si McIntyre around halftime, gaining a numerical advantage.
Hugo Keenan scored three minutes after the restart, extending Leinster's lead. Although Ford kept Sale within reach with a penalty, Ryan Baird and Rieko Ioane scored tries in quick succession near the corner flag. Ioane's try originated from a high ball expertly claimed by Leinster fly-half Johnny Byrne.
Byrne then assisted the fifth try, delivering a precise chip kick that Tommy O'Brien successfully grounded just beyond the try line.
Final Moments and Team Lineups
With the outcome largely decided, Sale showed determination as Alex Wills capitalized on a loose ball to score their only try of the match.
Leinster concluded the game emphatically, with man of the match Dan Sheehan making a powerful run deep into Sale territory before passing to Jamie Osborne for the final try in the closing moments.
