Leicester Overcome Bristol to Secure Bonus-Point Victory
Leicester Tigers secured a crucial 33-19 bonus-point victory against Bristol Bears at Welford Road, moving above their play-off rivals into third place in The Prem Rugby league. This match marked Leicester's first league appearance since January and ended Bristol's impressive five-match winning streak in the competition.
Leicester's fly-half Billy Searle was instrumental in the win, demonstrating exceptional kicking accuracy that proved decisive in a fast-paced and fluctuating contest. The Tigers sealed their fourth try during added time when Gabe Hamer-Webb made a remarkable break to score.
Bristol, now fifth in the standings, had not lost a Prem Rugby match since October but faced early pressure as Leicester started strongly. Leicester captain Ollie Chessum was among several internationals returning immediately after the Six Nations, while Bristol rested England's Ellis Genge, Wales' Louis Rees-Zammit, and Scotland's Tom Jordan.
Joaquin Moro scored the opening try by powering over from close range following a quick tap penalty. Hanro Liebenberg extended the lead with a try resulting from a fluid attacking move starting from Leicester's own 22-meter line.
Despite being initially outplayed, Bristol responded with two tries in quick succession to reignite the match. Gabriel Ibitoye's impressive run and offload created space for Fitz Harding to score, followed by a brilliant individual try from wing Kalaveti Ravouvou, who evaded a tackle from Freddie Steward.
Searle added a penalty to increase Leicester's lead, but Bristol's forwards applied sustained pressure, culminating in Harding scoring his second try. James Williams' conversion brought Bristol within one point at 20-19.
Leicester then elevated their performance. Searle orchestrated a promising break that could have resulted in one of the season's best tries, but Moro lost control of the ball near the line. However, Moro later assisted a crucial try by setting up replacement Izaia Perese, who powered over.
Bristol continued to contest fiercely, but a 78th-minute penalty from Searle secured Leicester's victory. Freddie Steward's excellent kick then launched Hamer-Webb, who scored the bonus-point try.
Post-Match Reactions
"It didn't feel like fun to me at times! At the end I was screaming [for them] to kick the ball out but they backed themselves to score the bonus-point try.
"I am proud of the lads. The internationals have been away for two months so they had to get back up to speed but their attitude was outstanding.
"We have to keep working. We'll keep running and enjoy tonight."
Leicester Tigers captain Ollie Chessum reflected on the team's effort and attitude following the match.
"We created enough opportunities to get more out of the game but we squandered them. We showed good fight but ultimately we ended up chasing the game.
"A lot of the boys are disappointed but we will get better. We had the attacking intent we all saw in the Six Nations, we made decisions to go which were right.
"We wanted to take Leicester out of their comfort zone and they were on their knees at one stage. We changed it up but to win here you have to be at your best."
Bristol Bears director of rugby Pat Lam shared his thoughts with BBC Radio Bristol.
