Gloucester produced their best league performance in recent months, overcoming a second-half resurgence from play-off chasing Exeter Chiefs to win 34-31 at Kingsholm.

After conceding an early try from Ross Vintcent, the home side dominated a frenetic first half, securing a try bonus point with scores from Tomos Williams, Will Trenholm, and two from Max Llewellyn.

Efforts from Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and Greg Fisilau either side of halftime gave the Chiefs renewed hope. After conceding a second try to Trenholm, Exeter took control by adding a penalty try and a score from Henry Slade, narrowing the gap to three points and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

However, with the clock in the red and Exeter pressing hard, flanker Ethan Roots received a 20-minute red card for striking a Gloucester tackler in the face. Williams then kicked the ball into touch to secure Gloucester's well-earned victory.

Despite earning two bonus points and moving up to fourth place, the loss is a setback for the Chiefs' play-off ambitions. Baxter's side now sits just one point ahead of Bristol and still faces upcoming matches against fellow contenders Bath and Leicester Tigers.

Match Progression and Key Moments

The Chiefs, aware that a strong win could elevate them above Bristol and Leicester into third place, started the match strongly.

Stephen Varney's up-and-under kick was regathered by Greg Fisilau, with Paul Brown-Bampoe accelerating down the wing before offloading to Vintcent, who scored unchallenged.

That lead was short-lived. Following robust runs by Ben Loader, Gloucester advanced into Exeter's 22, where Williams found Llewellyn. Llewellyn stepped inside to power over the line.

Williams then added his own try. With Gloucester's attack appearing to stall, the scrum-half exploited a small gap around the ruck to dart over and extend the lead.

Gloucester's momentum continued as Loader broke through two tackles on the wing and delivered a precise offload to Llewellyn, who evaded Fisilau to score his second try, making the score 19-5.

Exeter responded swiftly through Feyi-Waboso, who cut inside past George Barton following strong carries from Harvey Skinner.

However, neither defense could establish dominance, and Gloucester restored their advantage through Trenholm, who powered over from short range, driving two Exeter tacklers over the line with him.

The Chiefs required renewed impetus and found it shortly after halftime. Feyi-Waboso benefited from a Varney offload that deflected off a Gloucester hand.

The winger was tackled short of the line by Barton, but in the next phase Slade found Fisilau, who scored as Gloucester's defense was stretched.

The match then shifted from free-flowing rugby to a defensive battle before Gloucester scored again. Trenholm emerged from a pile of bodies following a well-executed line-out drive.

With the outcome in the balance, Exeter took risks and scored two consecutive tries.

First, a penalty try was awarded by referee Matthew Carley after Dian Bleuler was sin-binned for coming in at the side of the driving maul. Minutes later, Slade was credited with a try after slipping through several missed tackles by Gloucester.

In the final play, Roots was tackled and reacted by striking out, resulting in a penalty for Gloucester, who move up the table into the Champions Cup places in eighth.
