Glasgow Warriors overcame the Bulls in a hard-fought and thrilling encounter played in challenging weather conditions at Scotstoun, advancing to the Champions Cup quarter-finals.
Franco Smith's team will host Toulon next Saturday in their first-ever home quarter-final in this competition.
Max Williamson and Jack Dempsey scored first-half tries for Glasgow, while Patrick Schickerling and Stafford McDowall added tries after the break.
The Bulls led 14-12 at halftime, benefiting from a strong breeze. They controlled territory in the first half, with Johan Grobbelaar scoring a try and Handre Pollard contributing three penalties.
After the interval, Glasgow's greater ambition prevailed by a narrow margin.
Schickerling's try was a turning point, coming at a moment when most of the Scotstoun crowd expected the team to take a penalty kick for three points. Instead, Glasgow opted to tap and run, a risky decision that paid off.
Their fourth try came shortly after from McDowall. With eight minutes remaining, Glasgow led by eight points, but a converted try by Marco van Staden for the Bulls late in the game set up a dramatic finish.
Adam Hastings sealed the victory with a penalty kick as the clock expired, securing a well-earned four-point win.
Although Scotstoun was spared the worst of Storm Dave, conditions remained difficult with wind and rain affecting play, making the match a demanding contest.
Match Context and Team Performances
The Bulls qualified for the knockout stages despite losing three group matches, including heavy defeats to Northampton and Bristol. They fielded hybrid teams in those games but brought a strong squad with 14 Springboks to Glasgow, applying significant physical pressure from the outset.
Playing with the wind advantage in the first half, the Bulls opened scoring through Pollard's penalty kick.
The Bulls employed a conservative game plan focused on power, phases, and pressure, contrasting with Glasgow's more expansive style. Glasgow struggled for territory against the wind but created some promising moments after Pollard's opening penalty.
One such moment ended when Matt Fagerson ran onto a pass in the Bulls' 22 but lost control of the ball, and another when Glasgow failed to secure a lineout.
On their third attempt, Glasgow succeeded. Dan Lancaster found the talented Stafford McDowall, who broke through a gap and sprinted away.
Despite Bulls' defensive efforts, Glasgow maintained pressure. Matt Fagerson facilitated play, linking with George Horne, who, despite being tackled near the posts and appearing injured, managed to offload to Williamson, who scored.
Lancaster converted, putting Glasgow ahead 7-3. The Bulls responded with a try by Grobbelaar in the corner after sustained phases, taking an 8-7 lead.
Pollard added a penalty on the half-hour mark, but Glasgow quickly replied. Although Horne was injured by then, Glasgow's decision to kick for touch instead of goal from a penalty paid dividends, with Dempsey scoring a try. The conversion was missed, but Glasgow led by one point again.
Pollard kicked a third penalty just before halftime, restoring the Bulls' lead. However, the Bulls lost winger Kurt-Lee Arendse at halftime, although the conditions did not favor fast wingers.
Second Half Developments
With the wind advantage, Glasgow began to dominate. Their strategy of declining penalty kicks at goal in favor of kicking for touch continued, even when it seemed risky.
Early in the second half, they had a kickable penalty but chose to go for touch and lost the lineout. Later, on the 55th minute, they again opted to tap and run from a penalty close to the posts, successfully executing the move as Schickerling powered over for an unconverted try, giving Glasgow a three-point lead.
McDowall's try in the 72nd minute appeared to secure the match, but the Bulls responded with a converted try by Van Staden, setting up a tense finale.
In the closing moments, Hastings delivered a penalty kick from in front of the posts, sending the crowd into celebration as Glasgow advanced.
