Steffan Emanuel Ready for Next Career Step After Wales U20s Campaign

Steffan Emanuel has made significant contributions to Wales Under-20s, scoring tries against France and England during the 2026 U20 Six Nations. The 20-year-old centre from Cardiff is preparing for what he describes as a "career-defining" transition as he looks forward to advancing with Cardiff after completing his final tournament with the Wales U20 team on Friday.

Currently participating in his third Junior World Championship, Emanuel will compete for fifth place against Scotland in Tbilisi at 17:30 BST. This placement would mark Wales' best finish since their runner-up position in 2013.

Emanuel has been a key player throughout the campaign alongside co-captain Deian Gwynne. He started matches against Georgia, South Africa, and Australia, and scored two tries as an early substitute in the game against Uruguay.

Having benefited from international age-grade rugby experience, Emanuel is now preparing to step into senior professional rugby.

Experience with Cardiff and Transition to Senior Rugby

Emanuel has already gained exposure to senior rugby with Cardiff, making his debut against Lyon in December 2024. He appeared six times last season for the United Rugby Championship quarter-finalists. Despite this experience, he acknowledges that returning to the Arms Park as a full-time senior player will present a new challenge.

"It's a big year to come out of the under-20s into the next block, that first year is almost career-defining," said Emanuel, who scored a try against Ulster in the URC. "It's a big jump, but something that I am looking forward to and hopefully I can kick on. "I've been fortunate enough to play some games for Cardiff and now I'll look to get a few more minutes under my belt."

Team Composition and Learning from Experienced Players

In the Wales Under-20s midfield, Emanuel is partnered with club-mate Osian Darwin-Lewis, while Cardiff teammates Tom Bowen and Rhys Cummings occupy the wing positions. These emerging talents are expected to strengthen Corniel van Zyl's squad next season as they compete for positions against established players.

Emanuel credits the presence of experienced players at Cardiff for his development. He mentioned learning from inside centres Ben Thomas and Rory Jennings, as well as Callum Sheedy and Ioan Lloyd, and outside players like Harry Millard.

"As an inside centre I was fortunate to have Ben Thomas and Rory Jennings to learn from and then Callum Sheedy and Ioan Lloyd inside, plus players like Harry Millard outside," Emanuel explained. "I am surrounded by all these top players and you try to learn as much as you possibly can from them."

Additionally, former Samoa centre and club stalwart Rey Lee-Lo joined Cardiff's management team last summer, providing further mentorship.

"To have someone like Rey still around the building is fantastic and I have loved picking his brains, which he probably hates me for! "He is someone that I can talk to quite easily if I have any questions or doubts; he is such a top bloke and is massive for the development of us young boys."

Wales Under-20s Prepare to Face Scotland for Fifth Place

Emanuel has participated in every Wales Under-20s fixture this season and will start in midfield against Scotland. The Welsh side, coached by Richard Whiffin, previously defeated Scotland 31-21 at Cardiff Arms Park during the U20 Six Nations and secured a 53-40 victory in a pre-tournament friendly at Meggetland.

Scotland has had a strong tournament, with wins over Italy, Japan, and Argentina, and only one loss to New Zealand, where they scored four tries in a 10-point defeat.

Wales will make two changes for the match: Cardiff's Tom Cottle will start at blind-side flanker, prompting co-captain Deian Gwynne to move to number eight, and Bristol's George Leyland will start at loose-head prop. Lock Luke Evans, who received a 20-minute red card for a high tackle against Australia, is not included in the squad.

The Wales Under-20s starting lineup against Scotland is: Lewis Edwards (Ospreys); Rhys Cummings (Cardiff), Osian Darwin-Lewis (Cardiff), Steffan Emanuel (Cardiff), Tom Bowen (Cardiff); Carwyn Leggatt-Jones (Scarlets), Sion Davies (Cardiff); George Leyland (Bristol), Tom Howe (Cardiff), Jac Pritchard (Scarlets), Will Evans (Scarlets), Osian Williams (Bristol), Tom Cottle (Cardiff), Caio James (Gloucester), Deian Gwynne (Gloucester, captain).

Replacements include Oscar Thomas (Bath), Hudson Nevin (Scarlets), Yestyn Cook (Scarlets), Alex Ridgway (Bath), Sam Morgan (Ospreys), Cai Gealy (Bristol), Lloyd Lucas (Cardiff), and Bailey Cutts (Bath).
