Tries: Barton, Gwynne Conversions: C Atkinson

Bristol Bears enhanced their Premiership play-off prospects with a commanding seven-try victory over Gloucester at Ashton Gate.

Bears director of rugby Pat Lam emphasized the necessity of defeating the Cherry and Whites to maintain any chance of reaching the top four following two consecutive losses. Bristol's side scored on their first three incursions into Gloucester's 22.

Kieran Marmion scored from close range, followed by two tries from Keleveti Ravouvou, a try from Fitz Harding, and a penalty try, securing a bonus point and a comfortable 33-12 lead at halftime.

In a less eventful second half, Tom Jordan and Gabriel Oghre added tries, culminating in a victory that places Bristol just two points behind Exeter Chiefs in fourth place. Bristol also set a new record for their highest-ever points tally against Gloucester across all competitions.

Gloucester's challenging season persists, with only two wins in 13 matches and continued defensive vulnerabilities.

In the first 20 minutes of games this season, Gloucester has conceded 23 tries, five more than bottom-placed Newcastle Falcons.

After conceding four early tries against Leicester in their previous Premiership match, Gloucester's allowance of a 19-5 deficit within 16 minutes at Ashton Gate will be a significant concern for director of rugby George Skivington and new technical director Chris Boyd.

Despite some attacking efforts resulting in tries by George Barton and Deian Gwynne, Gloucester remains in eighth place following the loss.

Bristol's Performance

Bristol demonstrated a timely resurgence in form. As Lam indicated, another defeat could have ended their play-off aspirations.

The team exhibited their characteristic attacking freedom and defensive solidity. They opened scoring after just three minutes when former Connacht scrum-half Marmion exploited space around the ruck to score beneath the posts.

Ravouvou scored twice in rapid succession, followed by Harding’s try from a well-executed tap penalty, securing the bonus point.

A penalty try was awarded after Josiah Edwards-Giraud was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on, one of three yellow cards issued to Gloucester players in the first half.

Tom Jordan's breakaway try and Oghre's rolling maul try added to Gloucester's difficulties.

Bristol will travel to Kingston Park next week to face Newcastle Falcons, with their pursuit of a top-four finish renewed, while Gloucester aims to secure a top-eight finish but must improve their performance to do so.

Post-Match Comments

Bristol Bears director of rugby Pat Lam told BBC Radio Bristol:
"I'm very pleased. The outcome we wanted was five points and giving away nothing. But the process of what we did today was the product of what we've been working on in the past two weeks.

Looking at those three defeats, that wasn't us, we did a lot of reviews and one-on-ones, and we put our focus on tidying up bits that were really poor, and we looked more like ourselves.

The leadership group talked about how we needed to be more precise, more accurate, and more decisive, and we effectively played the way we trained over the past two weeks.

Some of those tries just came from constant pressure against a Gloucester team that were right up for it."
Gloucester director of rugby George Skivington told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"The frustration there is that we didn't do anything, really. We didn't put our game on them, and Bristol beat us in most areas tonight.

We got caught by their physicality in the first half, and that led to ill-discipline, and before you know it you've got three yellow cards in the first half.

Against a team like Bristol, who use the space as well as they do, it's almost impossible to come back then. We were chasing our tail.

We haven't got the balance right. There's a lot of trying to play a little bit early that is hurting us. We want to play, push it a bit and play some rugby. But we're not in a sweet spot with the balance of our game, that's for sure."
