Mitchell Ruled Out of Six Nations Campaign

England's first-choice scrum-half Alex Mitchell has been ruled out for the remainder of the Six Nations tournament due to a hamstring injury sustained during Saturday's 42-21 defeat against Ireland.

Mitchell has been a consistent starter, having begun England's last 10 Six Nations matches and firmly establishing himself as head coach Steve Borthwick's preferred number nine in the lead-up to the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

During the match at Allianz Stadium, Leicester's Jack van Poortvliet replaced Mitchell off the bench in the 24th minute.

Within the wider squad, Bath's Ben Spencer remains another scrum-half option, while Sale's Raffi Quirke has been called up to provide additional cover following Mitchell's injury.

Mitchell's absence opens the possibility of an entirely new half-back partnership for England's upcoming match against Italy on 7 March. This situation also places fly-half George Ford under increased scrutiny, as he faces competition from Fin Smith after a less-than-impressive performance against Ireland.

Injuries and Squad Updates

Elsewhere in the squad, centre Ollie Lawrence will miss a two-day training camp this week due to a knee injury but remains optimistic about returning in time for the Italy fixture. Meanwhile, George Furbank is set to return to Northampton to participate in Saturday's Premiership Rugby Cup match against Saracens to gain more game time.

Furbank, who has struggled with injuries over the past year, could rejoin England's matchday squad if he successfully completes the upcoming fixture.

England's Six Nations Prospects

England entered the tournament on the back of 11 consecutive victories and harbored strong ambitions to claim their first Six Nations title since 2020. However, defeats by Scotland and Ireland have shifted their focus toward regaining stability rather than competing for trophies as they prepare to face Italy in Rome.

Historically, England have won all 32 previous encounters with Italy. Despite this, the Italian team has demonstrated an impressive campaign so far, securing a victory over Scotland in the opening round and mounting strong challenges against Ireland and France in narrow defeats.

Additional Context

Alex Mitchell also appeared off the bench in all three British and Irish Lions Tests in Australia last summer.
