GAA Congress Interrupted by Protest
The Gaelic Athletic Association's annual congress held at Croke Park on Saturday was interrupted by a protest demanding the association sever its sponsorship ties with Allianz.
The disruption occurred when several protesters entered a conference hall at the GAA's Dublin headquarters and displayed a banner behind the top table during the proceedings.
In response to the protest, GAA president Jarlath Burns adjourned the congress for a lunch break.
Calls to End Allianz Partnership
There have been calls for the GAA to end its 30-year partnership with Allianz following a report by UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese last year. The report alleged that the German company has financially benefited from the presence of Israeli forces in Gaza.
Despite these concerns, in December the GAA decided to maintain its sponsorship agreement with Allianz. This decision came after a recommendation from the association's ethics and integrity commission, even though a petition advocating for the termination of the relationship was signed by 800 current high-profile players.
