Murphy and Evloev in Cold UFC London Staredown
Movsar Evloev (left) and Lerone Murphy enter their UFC London featherweight fight unbeaten in a combined total of 37 bouts.
Lerone Murphy and Movsar Evloev engaged in a cold, intense staredown during their face-off ahead of their featherweight fight at UFC London, held at the O2 Arena on Saturday.
Manchester's Murphy received warm applause from the fans upon taking the stage, while Russia's Evloev was met with boos before the two fighters locked eyes in a tense confrontation.
Both athletes put their undefeated records on the line: Murphy, aged 34, remains unbeaten in 18 fights, while Evloev, 32, holds a perfect record of 19 wins.
"Ready for a war," said Murphy. "That's it - simple."
Evloev responded calmly, "He's not ready for a war - I'll show it tomorrow."
Throughout fight week, Evloev maintained a composed demeanor despite arriving only on Wednesday.
At the official weigh-ins on the morning of the event, Murphy was the first fighter on the scales, registering 145lb (10st 3lb), with Evloev weighing one pound heavier.
Unlike British UFC London stars such as Tom Aspinall and Paddy Pimblett in previous years, Murphy did not receive a fan serenade, which allowed him to maintain focus as he shadowboxed while awaiting Evloev's arrival.
The outcome of the Murphy vs Evloev fight will help determine the next contender for Alexander Volkanovski's featherweight title, although the UFC has not officially designated it as a number one contender bout.
Murphy is ranked third in the UFC featherweight division, with Evloev holding the top spot. However, sixth-ranked Jean Silva has indicated he may also bypass the queue to challenge Volkanovski.
Silva was present at the weigh-in, engaging with fans and will be seated cageside on fight night.
Murphy's previous bout ended spectacularly with a spinning elbow knockout of Aaron Pico, propelling him into title contention. Despite this, the UFC matched Volkanovski against second-ranked Diego Lopes, whom the champion had defeated 10 months earlier—a decision Murphy said
"woke me up to a lot of things."
Is matchmaking fair? Murphy's long road to UFC title contender
It has taken considerable time for Murphy to gain prominence in British MMA—seven years and 10 undefeated UFC fights to be precise—but his moment has arrived.
Murphy may not possess the finishing power of Aspinall or the charisma of Pimblett, but his record surpasses both.
Over a 10-year career spanning 18 fights, Murphy remains undefeated, holding the longest current win streak in the UFC featherweight division with nine consecutive victories.
For MMA fans, Murphy's journey is reminiscent of fellow Briton Leon Edwards, who steadily advanced to a UFC welterweight title shot.
Murphy looks to Edwards—who won the belt impressively and defended it twice—as an example of what can be achieved with opportunity.
Murphy has stated that continued victories will make it impossible to deny him a title shot, and a decisive win over Evloev would likely convince the UFC he deserves a championship opportunity.
Evloev presents perhaps the most challenging opponent of Murphy's career. If Murphy can defend against Evloev's takedowns and maintain the fight as a striking contest, he stands a strong chance of emerging from the O2 Arena as the new number one contender.
