Shiffrin Dominates Slalom to Secure Olympic Gold
American alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin reinforced her legacy as one of the greatest in the sport by winning the Olympic slalom gold medal in commanding fashion.
Twelve years after her initial Olympic slalom victory in Sochi at age 18, Shiffrin delivered an impressive performance, finishing with a combined time of 1:39.10. She secured the gold medal with a substantial margin of 1.50 seconds ahead of the runner-up, marking her third Olympic championship.
The 30-year-old established a strong lead during the first run, clocking 47.13 seconds, which put her 0.82 seconds ahead of second-place competitor Lena Duerr from Germany.
Duerr was the only athlete to finish within one second of Shiffrin in the opening run; however, she straddled the first gate during her second run, which eliminated her from medal contention.
This development left Shiffrin with a clear path to the gold medal, and she completed her second run in 51.97 seconds, effectively delivering an exhibition performance.
Switzerland's Camille Rast earned the silver medal, while Sweden's Anna Swenn Larsson took bronze.
