Royal Presence at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Opening
King Charles and Queen Camilla will officially inaugurate the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking the start of ten days filled with sporting events. The royal couple will be present at the opening ceremony held at the OVO Hydro on 23 July, joining athletes, officials, volunteers, and spectators from across the Commonwealth.
Sir Chris Hoy, one of Scotland's most decorated athletes, is also scheduled to participate in the ceremony, which will be broadcast live by Channel 5.
King's Baton Relay and Ceremony Traditions
King Charles initiated the King's Baton Relay at Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day in March 2025, commemorating 500 days until the Games commence. During this event, he handed the baton to Sir Chris Hoy, who became the first bearer on its global journey.
Traditionally, the King's Baton Relay involves a single baton traveling through all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories. However, for the 2026 Games, each competing team received its own baton to decorate. The relay began in Trinidad and Tobago, marking the longest relay in the Games’ history.
The batons arrived in Scotland on 1 July and will be present at over 50 events across the country before converging at the Hydro. All 74 batons will be reunited in Glasgow for the first time during the opening ceremony, where King Charles will read aloud the message he placed inside the King's Scotland baton on 10 March 2025. This reading will officially declare the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games open.

Entertainment and Broadcast Details
Earlier this week, it was announced that Scottish singers KT Tunstall and Nathan Evans will headline the opening ceremony, alongside Callum Beattie and Nina Nesbitt. Channel 5 will broadcast the ceremony live on air and via streaming, followed by daily highlights hosted by former Olympic sprinter Jeanette Kwakye.
The broadcast will be shown live under license from TNT Sports, the official UK live broadcast partner for the Games. BBC Alba will also provide nightly coverage and highlights, with specific broadcast times and programming details to be announced closer to the event.

"Welcoming the King and Queen to the Hydro is a proud moment for everyone building the opening ceremony. We set out to make something bold, unmistakably Glasgow and unlike anything the Commonwealth Games has produced before.
